Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has been called-up to the England U21 squad for the first time.

Hoffenheim loanee Reiss Nelson and on-loan West Brom forward Harvey Barnes have also received their first call-ups.

The pair are on loan from Premier League clubs Arsenal and Leicester City respectively.

Trio called-up

The trio have been selected for England’s final two Euro 2019 qualifiers against Andorra and Scotland this month.

Foden is the youngest player to win the Premier League. The midfielder has made five appearances for Manchester City this season, scoring one goal.

Meanwhile, Harvey Barnes and Reiss Nelson have impressed during their respective loans.

With three teenagers in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad, Under-21s boss Aidy Boothroyd pointed to the importance of younger players.

He said:

“There will be one or two opportunities for players who haven’t played for the U21s yet, to show what they’re all about.”
“I really believe our system is working to benefit all of our players at the moment and it all starts at the top, when you’ve got a manager like Gareth.”
“He believes in youth. The system that we have and the way that we work so when the senior team get injuries, his first thought is to call me and look into the U21s squad. There’s never been a better time to be an England player.”

England on the brink

The Under-21s will first host Andorra at Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium on 11th October (19:45 BST) before travelling to Edinburgh, where they will face Scotland at Tynecastle Park (17:30) on 16th October.

Boothroyd’s side need just a point from their final two Euro qualifiers to secure their place at next summer’s Finals in Italy and San Marino.
