EFL from Past to Present

With this long history, EFL continues to evolve. We would like to share with you the changes and developments since its beginning.

It all started in 1888 when the league was founded at the Royal Hotel. Then, in 1889, after a goal was disallowed in a match, the muses visited Alexander Brodie and led him to invent the nets in the goalposts. This was a big breakthrough for everyone. It was also during this year that Arthur Wharton, the first black player in the league, became a goalkeeper. Two years later, in 1891, penalty kicks were introduced for the first time, which changed the course of the game considerably. A year later, the league was starting to grow, with 28 clubs in the league. By 1920, the number of clubs would grow to 66. In 1927, the BBC broadcast the first football match on the radio, which was great entertainment for everyone. After that, of course, people were wondering when it would be shown on television.

In 1938, the match between Huddersfield Town and Preston North was televised and attracted a lot of attention. In 1950, the number of clubs in the league increased to 92. In 1961, in a wonderful development, the maximum wage in football was abolished. It was normally £20 a week. 1969 was a great year for the world and for the English Football League. It was the first time a match was televised in color. In 1983, Canon, the camera brand, became the first sponsor of The Football League. After that, the developments have been relentless, and this is still the case to this day. The most recent change we can mention is that in 2016, The Football League changed its name to the English Football League as we know and talk about it now.

As you can see, the EFL, as it is now known, is a league that has had many firsts. We hope it will continue to do so from now on.
