Middlesbrough’s Rob Edwards can end important Preston North End streak by achieving personal first

Rob Edwards’ Middlesbrough travel to Preston North End this weekend, and the Boro boss will be hoping to achieve a career first.

On the surface, the Teesside club are in pole position going into the clash, sitting top of the Championship after four wins in as many games – and experts think summer signing David Strelec was the missing puzzle piece in the squad.

On deeper inspection, new manager Edwards, who was brought in to replace Michael Carrick at the Riverside Stadium, will be hoping he can earn Boro a first win at Deepdale in five years.

But there are two more streaks Edwards will want to shake off against Preston.

Preston North End are unbeaten in the league at home this season

Defeating Paul Heckingbottom’s Preston will be no easy task, given they remain unbeaten in the league at home this season.

That streak extends back to last season, with them falling to a 2-1 defeat to Plymouth Argyle in April.

A 2-2 draw with Bristol City at the end of last term, followed by a 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers, a 2-1 victory over Leicester City and 1-0 win against Ipswich Town has Preston fans feeling confident in their own back yard.

They lost to Wrexham 3-2 in the Carabao Cup second round at home at the end of last month, though.

Rob Edwards has never beaten Preston North End as a manager or a player

As well as ending Preston’s mounting strong record at home, Edwards will also want to beat the second tier stalwarts for another reason.

He has never recorded a win against them as a player or a manager. Before he hung up his boots, Edwards faced Preston just once, losing that encounter.

As Luton Town boss, he played Preston three times, winning none of the matches. The Hatters saw out two draws and one loss, with Edwards’ last meeting with them ending in a 0-0 draw at Kenilworth Road.
