Sheffield United played their part in crazy Championship play-off final stat, it’s happened three times in a row

Sheffield United supporters will be preparing for life in the Championship once again this summer, as their team were beaten in dramatic circumstances at Wembley in the play-off final.

It’s now 10 play-off campaigns and 10 defeats for the Blades, with Tommy Watson’s solo effort in the 95th minute securing Sunderland a place back in the Premier League following an eight-year absence.

The first half of the clash was one that saw Chris Wilder’s side take full advantage of the Black Cats’ slow start, and Tyrese Campbell found the back of the net for the 11th time in 2024/25 to hand his team the lead.

Harrison Burrows had a goal disallowed by VAR, and from there Sunderland found a way back into the game. But there is one strange tradition that Campbell continued with his excellent chipped effort that Anthony Patterson had no answer for.

Tyrese Campbell’s goal ensured that one bizarre Championship play-off final tradition continued

It took 25 minutes for Sheffield United to get their noses in front, with Patterson denying Kieffer Moore a very early opener with a stunning save inside the first two minutes.

However, it was written in the stars for a player to find the back of the net in the 25th minute, as in the previous two Championship play-off finals the first goal has come in the 23rd (2023) and 24th (2024) minutes.

Luton Town’s Jordan Clark was the one to have initiated this statistic, when he fired his team into the lead against Coventry City with the game eventually being decided on penalties with the Hatters coming out on top.

In last season’s Championship play-off final, Adam Armstrong scored the only goal of the game against Leeds United for Southampton, with his strike sending the Saints back to the Premier League as they held on for the final 66 minutes to take victory.

Sheffield United now have a huge summer transfer window ahead of them

Anger and heartbreak will turn to frustration in the next few days as Wilder investigates where it went wrong for Sheffield United once again in the play-offs, and this pain will be hard to shake off ahead of next season.

Campbell has proven to be an excellent signing for the Blades, but Tom Cannon has to show more in 2025/26 after scoring just once for his team after joining for £10m in the January transfer window, as per The Athletic.

Sheffield United have lacked a true goalscorer all season long, and their recruitment team have a tough decision to make in the summer as to whether they go and buy another forward to help ease the pressure on Campbell and Cannon.
