Southampton won 2-1 at home to Wrexham on the 2025/26 Championship opening weekend.

Southampton beat Wrexham 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in a tightly contested affair.

The Will Still era in the Championship began poorly after the Red Dragons broke the deadlock on the 22-minute mark with a penalty kick.

New Wrexham signing Kieffer Moore was bearing down on Gavin Bazunu’s goal before a push in the back from Saints centre-back Ronnie Edwards stopped his shot.

Josh Windass dispatched the spot-kick to put Wrexham ahead, and the visitors looked to be heading for victory before an 89th-minute free-kick from Ryan Manning saw the game come back on level terms.

Jack Stephens scored a dramatic late winner for Southampton, and the Saints supporters shared their elation on social media.

Promising signs for Will Still era at Southampton after Wrexham win

The fighting spirit will have been as enjoyable for Still as the three points on his first Championship outing.

It was almost a rude awakening for the former RC Lens boss. Still expected a difficult test from Wrexham prior to the game, and his second tier debut certainly lived up to his expectations.

Despite the Still era starting with a win, Southampton remain in a period of uncertainty until the summer transfer window slams shut.

Tyler Dibling is wanted by Everton and was not present in Still’s squad. Atletico Madrid are tracking Mateus Fernandes, who came on as a second-half substitute.

It will become clear where Southampton sit in the automatic promotion pecking order after the window shuts, but the promising signs are there for Still after Saturday’s comeback win.
