Sheffield United booked their place in the Championship play-off final at Wembley after thrashing Bristol City 6-0 on aggregate.

The Blades went into this second leg tie at Bramall Lane with a 3-0 lead over the Robins, knowing their place in the final was close to being confirmed.

But instead of resting on their laurels, Chris Wilder’s men were relentless, as Sheffield United beat Bristol City 3-0 thanks to goals from Kieffer Moore, Gustavo Hamer and Callum O’Hare.

Sheffield United fans compared Harrison Burrows to Roberto Carlos after he added another two assists to his collection, while the rest of the defence was impenetrable.

It was a history-making performance from the Yorkshire side across two legs in the Championship play-offs, and George Baldock would have been looking down beaming with pride.

Sheffield United fans chant about George Baldock during Bristol City win

In October 2024, supporters around the globe were dealt the tragic news that former right-back Baldock was found dead in the swimming pool of his house in Glyfada, southern Athens.

Aged just 31 at the time of his passing, Baldock was playing for Greek side Panathinaikos after leaving Sheffield United in the summer of 2024.

The former Greece international made 219 appearances for the Blades across seven years at the club, which included two promotions to the Premier League.

It’s sad Baldock never got to experience the victory over Bristol City on Monday night, as he would have surely been present at the game, or would have at least watched on from his home.

However, in a heartwarming moment at Bramall Lane, thousands of Sheffield United fans joined in with the chant “There’s a star man running down the right, his name is Georgie Baldock and he’s ——- dynamite.”

The home crowd created a spine-tingling atmosphere for someone who was adored by the fans during his time at the club, and they will now be hoping they can get the job done at Wembley.

Sheffield United’s play-off record

United finished third in the Championship, and the gulf in class between them and Bristol City was massive.

Their performances over two legs will have filled supporters with confidence that a return to the Premier League is on the cards, as Sheffield United have never won promotion via the play-offs.

The Blades have failed on five occasions in the second tier, with the most recent disappointment coming in the 2021/22 campaign, where they lost out to Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals.

Hopefully, they will have now put their past failures behind them as one of Coventry City or Sunderland await at Wembley.
