Southampton finally took their 12th point of the 2024/25 campaign, as they held Manchester City to a 0-0 draw at St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The point took them past Derby County’s record low of 11, with the Rams setting that total in the 2007/08 season but the Saints came incredibly close to matching that tally with just two games left in their Premier League return.
Still without a manager, Southampton have been incredibly disappointing since winning promotion through the Championship play-offs 12 months ago, and they are now preparing for life back in the second tier.
However, the Saints posted on social media after full-time celebrating the fact that they surpassed the record and a comment made by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale following their draw will only further intensify the bizarre feeling that Derby fans are feeling.
Aaron Ramsdale was ‘delighted’ with Southampton surpassing Derby County’s record
This season has been one of abject failure for Southampton, and supporters will have rightly been disgruntled at the fact that it has taken this long to surpass 11 points, while Rams fans will find the reaction to the point a little bit strange.

Speaking after the game, Ramsdale spoke of his relief that his team were able to make it past that total, despite being relegated from the Premier League in the fewest number of games in history.
When asked about avoiding that record, he said: “Delighted.
“We’re not happy at all with how the season’s gone but we’re definitely happy the fact that we’ve managed to avoid that record.
“We’re certainly under no illusion that it’s still not a great points tally but it’s that one off our back. The fans are obviously very happy in the sun smiling,” Ramsdale concluded.
Aaron Ramsdale’s future at St. Mary’s looks conclusive
While Southampton are heading back to the Championship, their goalkeeper’s place in the Premier League may still be safe.
Ramsdale looks likely to be sold in the summer as the Saints try to make the changes needed across the squad to help fight for promotion in the second tier in 2025/26, and he will be looking to forget about one of the toughest seasons in his career.
| Appearances | 28 |
| Clean sheets | 3 |
| Goals conceded | 62 |
| Save percentage | 65.4% |
| Errors leading to goals | 0 |
| High claims | 23 |
| Penalties saved | 2 |
It’s the third time he has suffered relegation to the Championship, and he will be hoping that a move to a team further up the Premier League would allow him to get back on track with his goal of going to the World Cup with England next summer.
Nevertheless, this last year will be tough to take for all involved with Southampton and for Derby supporters, they must be wondering what more will it take to finally lose that one of a kind record.
