Bristol City become latest ‘sleeping giants’ to be linked with Saudi takeover as big-money ‘plan’ emerges

It seems like most clubs have got new owners in the last few years, but Bristol City are thought to be the next target for one mega wealthy Saudi businessman.

It’s not just the clubs in the top tier that are subject to takeovers from the richest people in the world anymore, with the Championship and even League One boasting immense riches.

You only have to look at the success of Wrexham and Birmingham City to see that there is great potential in the EFL for tycoons and big names to come in and turn your standard football club into a commercial giant.

Bristol City have a new manager now, with Gerhard Struber taking over from the departing Liam Manning, but there’s a chance they could also have new owners soon.

Turki Alalshikh is now looking at Bristol City

As per a report from Alan Nixon on Patreon, Bristol City are now the target of a takeover from Saudi Arabian businessman Turki Alalshikh.

Renowned for his work in the boxing world, Alalshikh is now thought to be eager to find a club in the English Football League he can buy, and has turned his attention to Bristol City of late.

Described as “sleeping giants” by Nixon, Bristol City are currently owned by the already “very wealthy” Lansdown family. They built the club and stadium over the years, and are expected to be reluctant to sell up.

Nixon points out there is no “hint of them selling” and insists this particular route may be closed for Alalshikh, but adds that the Saudi deal-maker has a “lot of money” to fund his next “plan” in football.

Other clubs Turki Alalshikh has been looking at this summer

Turki Alalshikh has a reported net worth of around $2.8 billion and has already shown interest in at least two clubs in the Championship this summer, but talk on those fronts has gone cold.

Millwall were of interest not long ago, but that provisional approach was met with opposition by the London club and doesn’t appear to have been picked back up since.

While not officially named, we also know there is interest from Saudi sources in Sheffield Wednesday, and Alalshikh has been heavily rumoured to be the man behind that.

There is a belief that Alalshikh would prefer a club closer to London, but Bristol City could offer the perfect middle ground in that regard.
