As the dire situation at Sheffield Wednesday continues, club legend Carlton Palmer has offered his thoughts on the matter, including a surprising claim about Dejphon Chansiri and a positive prediction for the future.

Under the current ownership, led by Dejphon Chansiri, Sheffield Wednesday are a club in crisis and there are no real signs of things getting any better any time soon.

Financial issues have plagued the club all summer, leaving the Owls heading into the new season with a threadbare squad, an untested new manager, and a disillusioned fanbase.

Those fans have recently been protesting Chansiri, to varying degrees of success. While the chairman continues to stand firm and maintain his control of the club, there are questions over just how long this tug-of-war can continue, and what it will take for Chansiri to step aside.

Carlton Palmer claims Dejphon Chansiri still has money

Speaking to The Sun newspaper (published 24th August, 2025), Owls icon Carlton Palmer admitted the current plight of his old club is proving to be very painful to watch, and suggested there’s a chance Chansiri is doing all of this on purpose by holding back on funding the club.

Palmer said: “What is happening at my old club is breaking my heart. I don’t believe Chansiri has run out of money. He’s part of a wealthy family that have already ploughed £200m into the club. I’m sure he is not short of the odd £20-30m.

“I have spoken to several of the right-hand men at the club and the biggest problem is that he wants in the region of £100m to sell the club, which is a major stumbling block.”

Palmer went on to outline how he envisages a sale proceeding, with a compromise needed on Chansiri’s £100m valuation so that progress can be achieved for the club.

He added: “I cannot see why there can’t be an agreement where he sells for £60m with a £40m caveat if the club reaches the Premier League.

“The club needs a change to move forward. I feel absolutely devastated for the supporters who are having to endure this nightmare. The sooner there is a change of ownership the better. The longer it carries on this way, the club will be damaged more and more.”

We know that whoever does take over at Sheffield Wednesday will have ambitious plans for the sleeping giant, including Saudi investors wanting to become a top five club and build a new stadium for the Owls. At this point, most fans would be more than happy to just have a sense of normality, never mind any grand ambitions.

Sheffield Wednesday could follow a similar path to Birmingham City

In addition to his claims regarding Chansiri, Palmer also pointed out how Wednesday could follow the example of Birmingham City if new owners do come in, taking a backward step before moving forward rapidly.

He added: “I try to see things from a positive point of view. Just three years ago, Birmingham City were in a similar situation and they are now in a completely different scenario. I’m hoping Sheffield Wednesday can do the same.”

There’s a long way to go before anything like that happens, of course. Sadly, it could be a while before we even see a successful takeover occur, never mind the longer-term impact of those new owners.
