Championship expert predicts shock result in Preston North End vs Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough are flying high at the top of the Championship table, but a Sky Sports pundit thinks their winning streak will come to an end against Preston North End on Saturday.

This weekend’s home side have won the last five meetings between the clubs at Deepdale, the last three coming via a 2-1 scoreline.

If Middlesbrough shake off that hoodoo and win this weekend, they will equal Cardiff City’s record of picking up three points in each of their first five Championship games.

But after seeing off parachute payment clubs Ipswich Town and Leicester City already this season, Preston have been tipped to hold Boro to a draw.

Sky Sports pundit shares score prediction for Middlesbrough v Preston North End

Speaking on the Sky Sports Championship Predictions podcast, EFL Editor Simeon Gholam said: “Preston, very, very decent so far. Middlesbrough had an incredible start, four wins out of four. They are absolutely flying, it feels like Rob Edwards has really revitalised and brought that place together after a disappointing end to last season.

“Still very early days of course, but very good signs from what we’ve seen so far, not conceding, scoring goals.”

Co-host, former Football League ace David Prutton, agreed with Gholam, before revealing why he thought Preston might be able to stop Boro’s winning streak.

He said: “Preston have had a really good start to the season, eye-catching results and performances, could possibly be a bit of [motivation] from the end of last season where Paul knew his side were too close to comfort when it came to who was possibly going down.

“Seemingly, they have learnt from that. But big test with Boro in town.”

Considering Preston’s record in the clash, Prutton concluded: “I’m going to go for a draw here, I’m going to go 1-1, ending Middlesbrough’s perfect start.”

Rob Edwards’ ‘challenge’ will be to ensure strong Championship start isn’t ‘a flash in the pan’

After recording the best start to a Boro season since the 2009/10 campaign, Prutton is hoping Edwards can continue that form.

Prutton said: “He’s got players that are running through brick walls for him, I mean Aidan Morris, Hayden Hackney, what a midfield partnership that is. So much to like about the way that they’ve started the season, and again, his obvious challenge is to make sure this isn’t just a flash in the pan.

“I’m sure Boro fans have been disappointed with them not knocking on the door for the top two in such a long period of time, and also flirting with the play-offs, so that’s Rob’s challenge.”

Under Michael Carrick, Boro missed out on the play-offs last term, finishing 10th after an 8th place finish the season prior.
