An impressive Josh Coburn strike was enough for Millwall to defeat Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night.

Coburn’s first-half smash clinched play-off chasing Millwall a 1-0 win to dent Sheffield United’s automatic promotion chances, making it It is four wins in six for Alex Neil’s side, who are now just three points below sixth-placed Middlesbrough ahead of the final five-game run-in.

Millwall turned in one of their best away displays of the season to frustrate the Blades, meaning the Lions have now beaten each of the Championship’s top three teams this season and that Chris Wilder’s side have lost two Championship games in a row.

They are two points below league leaders Leeds United and Burnley with five games of the season left to play, with two points separating them and second-placed Burnley and leaders Leeds. Had their not been a points deduction, each side would be on 85 points ahead of the automatic promotion run-in.

Chris Wilder blasts referee Sam Allison in Millwall defeat

The Lions turned in a never-say-die defensive display and were a constant threat on the counter as well. It left Wilder frustrated and angry at full-time. Speaking post-match, he outlined the main issue in the game via Sun journalist Justin Allen.

Wilder slammed referee Sam Allison after failing to award the Blades a penalty for a pull on Anel Ahmedhodzic’s shirt. Wilder stated: “I’m not a fan of the referee.

“I wasn’t a fan of him last season when he refereed us against Luton when he was asking for Ross Barkley’s shirt.

“Don’t know who’s shirt he was after today; maybe the shirt on Anel’s back that got absolutely ripped to pieces.

“I always think he wants to be the star of the show, so I knew what was coming — I’m not surprised.”

Wilder also spoke to Sky Sports post-match, he added: “We have to deal with the negativity because we’ve brought it on ourselves, I’ve no problem with that. The narrative will be, ‘we’re out of the race’. I don’t think that’s the case with five games to go.

“We’ve got to reset. I’ve got to pick the right team for Saturday [at Plymouth] because there’s no real margin for error now. We’ve not lost three games on the spin all season; we’ve lost two twice. We’ve got to adjust that and get back on track, so these last two results don’t define our season.

“It’s a new experience for a lot of our players, playing for a big club in this division — it’s not League One now, it’s big boys’ football.”

Wilder can’t complain after Leeds United’s linesman issue against Middlesbrough

Leeds could have felt hard done by themselves in their 1-0 win against Middlesbrough last night. They should have been out of sight but for two dreadful offside calls, which threatened to change the game and came close to costing Leeds points.

Ao Tanaka and Patrick Bamford both thought they’d killed the game off but each of the two linemen called it wrong on replay. Had that gone against Leeds, as well as the Ahmedhodzic call at Bramall Lane, that would’ve made for a much different outlook at the top.

Such calls for every side at this crucial juncture in the season need to be spot on. We are talking about the finances involved and the short and long-term future of these clubs being at stake and promotion could hinge on such a call being made correctly, especially in a tight race expected to go right to the wire.

Wilder may have been hard done by somewhat; but it was nowhere near as clear as the incidents at The Riverside. If Leeds weren’t promoted off the back of poor officiating, I’m sure Daniel Farke would have sterner words to say than Wilder’s outburst last night.
