Dave Jones once persuaded Roger Johnson to snub Swansea City in favour of joining their arch rivals Cardiff City.

The defender played for a number of clubs in the EFL, most notably the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers.

Johnson linked up with Jones at Cardiff in 2006 and spent three years with the Bluebirds before heading to Birmingham.

Before committing to the deal, he had to decide between the two South Wales clubs, but Jones came up with a hilarious way to persuade the centre-back.

Dave Jones intercepted Swansea bid for Roger Johnson

Appearing on the Under the Cosh podcast, Jones revealed that he managed to tell Johnson that Swansea was too far away after speaking to him while on the way to sign for Cardiff’s biggest rivals.

He said: “Roger Johnson was going to sign for Swansea and I hijacked them on the motorway and then he came to come and sign for me.

“I literally got him to come and speak to us, told him Swansea was too far down the motorway and everything else.

“I had to sell the club. I had to give them what was in the future and what they could be part of.”

Roger Johnson had one big Cardiff City regret

The defender played over 100 times for the Bluebirds and was part of a squad that featured some Championship hall-of-famers like the late Peter Whittingham.

His final season coincided with the final year of Cardiff playing at Ninian Park and in 2013 admitted that not being able to play at the Cardiff City Stadium was his only regret.

“I loved playing for Cardiff, I loved the fans and I got on really well with all the players and the staff,” he told Wales Online.

“Giving up on all that wasn’t as easy as perhaps some people have made out.

“And not being able to be there to play at the new stadium was one of the big disappointments.

“I managed to have a look round it before I left and it’s so impressive.”
