Dave Jones has revealed that he used a secret trick that led to Jay Bothroyd getting an England call-up while playing in the Championship for Cardiff City.

Jones enjoyed a successful period as Cardiff manager but fell short when it came to getting them promoted to the Premier League.

A Championship play-off final defeat against Blackpool in 2010 was the closest he got, but his squad was full of talent.

As well as Bothroyd was the likes of Michael Chopra, Chris Burke and the late Peter Whittingham, who all made the Bluebirds tick.

In 2010, Bothroyd joined an illustrious list of second tier players to be called up by England, and Jones has revealed 15 years on that he implemented a secret trick that ended up paying off.

How Dave Jones helped Jay Bothroyd receive 2010 England call-up

Fabio Capello opted to include Bothroyd in his England squad for the game against France after his brilliant start to the season that saw him score 13 goals in the first 17 Championship games.

In the latest edition of Under the Cosh, Jones revealed how he had to try and bring Bothroyd ‘down a peg’ in order to get the best out of him, and one way was to convince him that England were coming to watch him.

“Before every game, every manager gets a sheet of the scouts that are coming to watch the game. I used to tell my secretary to put on the sheet that the England coaches were coming to watch,” Jones revealed.

“I used to say, to Jay, ‘he’s coming to watch you’. He was magnificent, unbelievable and unplayable.

“Lo and behold, he got a call-up and we couldn’t believe it. He got called up for the game against France and asked if we were going to go. I said ‘we’d all be there’.

How did Jay Bothroyd play on his England debut?

That game against France would prove to be his one and only appearance for the Three Lions as Capello introduced him as a second-half substitute.

He came on with around 10 minutes of the game left as England lost 2-1 at Wembley Stadium, but it is a moment he will never forget.

After his time at Cardiff, the forward would sign for the likes of Queens Park Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday, as well as have a spell in Thailand with Muanthong United.
