League Two side surprisingly top the list for most EFL promotions of all time

Promotion is one of the greatest things to experience in sport.

As proved by Tommy Watson’s late winner for Sunderland in the Championship play-off final, that sweet moment is one that lasts forever.

Some sides have been luckier to taste promotion more than once and are experts across the three divisions.

Surprisingly, it’s a current League Two team that sits at the top of the tree, winning promotion on 15 separate occasions throughout their history.

But who else has made the list? EFL Analysis has you covered.

11 EFL promotions

A variety of sides have been promoted 11 times in their history, including Swansea City and Blackpool.

The latter were promoted to the Premier League for the first time ever in 2010 under Ian Holloway after beating Nottingham Forest in the play-off semi-finals before winning 3-2 against Cardiff City at Wembley Stadium.

Scott Sinclair scored a hat-trick for Swansea against Reading in a 4-2 victory to send the Welsh side up.

12 EFL promotions

Norwich City have been known as serial promotion winners, especially during their yo-yo period between the top two tiers.

Daniel Farke masterminded two title-winning seasons for the Canaries and although it’s been a while since they’ve tasted promotion, there will be hopes that 13 – which is unlucky for some – can be their new favourite number.

13 EFL promotions

Only three teams make the list for this one. Luton Town have accumulated a fair few promotions through the Football League following their rise from the fifth tier to the top flight of English football.

Sheffield United’s dreadful play-offs record denied them a 14th promotion as the Blades were beaten by Sunderland.

Usually listed as one of the favourites to go back up, it feels like it’ll only be a matter of time before they earn that 14th promotion.

14 EFL promotions

No side has won the Championship more times than Leicester City (eight) so it’s no surprise to see them near the top.

The Foxes will be among the favourites for promotion and will be tipped to continue their run. Astonishingly, 13 of those 14 promotions have been from the Championship to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Birmingham City made an immediate return following their League One triumph after smashing the record points tally for an EFL club.

Grimsby Town – 15 promotions

Ask anyone in the street and Grimsby Town topping this list would’ve been the last answer for anyone as to who has had more EFL promotions than anyone else.

Despite topping the pile, Grimsby haven’t had an EFL promotion since the 97/98 season when the Mariners won the play-offs.

They were instantly relegated back to the third tier of football and sadly haven’t been promoted in the EFL since then – even having a spell in the National League – but there is hope those good days can come to Blundell Park soon.
