Sunderland are fighting to get back into the Premier League, while Middlesbrough came up short in their quest for promotion.

It’s been eight years since both Middlesbrough and Sunderland last lined out in the Premier League.

The 2016/17 Premier League season came to a close with Boro down in 19th place and their North East rivals sat dead bottom of the division with 24 points amassed from 38 games.

Sunderland are now competing in the Championship play-offs and will face Sheffield United in the final if they can get past Coventry City on the evening of May 13.

Now, with a potential return to the top flight on the cards for Regis Le Bris’ men, an insight into the club’s finances during their seasons in the Premier League has been provided.

How much Sunderland have lost in the Premier League

The Premier League era began in 1992, with Sunderland first winning promotion for the 1996/97 season when they finished 18th and were swiftly relegated.

They returned to England’s top tier in 1999 and remained there until 2003.

The Black Cats’ longest stint in the Premier League began in 2007 and lasted until the aforementioned relegation in 2017.

All told, Sunderland have spent 16 seasons in the division and as shared by finance expert Kieran Maguire on X/Twitter, they have lost £211m in that time – putting them sixth on the list for all-time biggest losses since the competition was rebranded in 1992.

How much Middlesbrough have lost in the Premier League

Chelsea top the list, while Middlesbrough had a period inside the top three or four for a while.

However, Boro have fallen down the list in recent years, only spending one campaign in the Premier League since a relegation in 2009.

Steve Gibson’s club have made a £147.9m loss during their years in the top flight, putting them 11th on the overall list.

No current Championship team, barring Leicester City who have just been relegated down to the second tier, have lost more than the North East clubs.
