Frank Lampard can show Norwich City what they missed out on in 2021 with high-flying Coventry City

Frank Lampard and Coventry City have one thing on their mind this season: promotion.

After falling short in the Championship play-offs in two of the last three seasons, the Sky Blues will hope it is a case of third time lucky.

Lampard has been a huge part of their upturn in form. While there are concerns about the depth of Coventry’s squad, they’ve looked good value in the early stages of the season.

Their opponents this week are Norwich City, who will also be eyeing up a top six finish after keeping talisman Josh Sargent.

Things could have been very different though had Lampard taken a different path.

Frank Lampard rejected the chance to become Norwich City manager

While he may be impressing at Coventry now, things haven’t always gone Lampard’s way in the management world.

A play-off semi-final defeat to Leeds United with Derby County was followed up by disappointing spells with Chelsea and Everton.

While searching for a job in 2021, he was offered the chance to become Norwich manager after they sacked Daniel Farke but, in the end, he opted to reject it.

The Canaries were in a relegation battle at the time and went down that year, remaining in the Championship ever since.

Frank Lampard boasts an impressive record vs Norwich City

It’s clear that Lampard studied his potential suitors well all those years ago as he has quite a good record against Norwich.

In the five previous meetings, the 47-year-old has only lost once, which happened to be the most recent meeting in January 2025.

That was still early into Lampard’s tenure at the Sky Blues and with home advantage this time, he will be expected to come away with three points.
