Some of the greatest ever Championship players have gone on to achieve some wonderful things in English football, with one former EFL star now on the verge of Champions League football.

Supporters of the EFL have been blessed to witness some unbelievable talents come through the division. Jarrod Bowen was a star at Hull City before earning a £20 million move to West Ham in 2020.

Bowen is now flying as an England international alongside Morgan Gibbs-White, who is flourishing at Nottingham Forest following previous loan spells at Swansea City and Sheffield United.

Crystal Palace attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze and Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise were also second-tier sensations before reaching the summit of English football.

For one former Championship star, though, his career looked to be going on a downward spiral on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, but he is now one of the Premier League’s most in-form wingers.

Newcastle United loaned Jacob Murphy to Sheffield Wednesday in 2019

Wednesday fans will remember when winger Jacob Murphy moved to Hillsborough on loan from Newcastle United in 2019.

Murphy was fresh from a six-month loan spell at West Brom, who finished in the Championship play-offs, with Wednesday pulling off a brilliant signing.

Jacob Murphy’s Sheffield Wednesday stats 2019/20
44 matches
9 goals
6 assists

The Englishman produced 15 goal involvements in 44 matches as the Owls finished in 16th position during the 2019/20 campaign.

Murphy returned to St James’ Park and was used sporadically, mainly featuring from the bench as opposed to earning a starting role.

So, when the PIF completed a lucrative takeover of Newcastle from Mike Ashley in October 2021, fans of the Magpies perhaps expected the winger to be sold.

But, in the years that followed, the 30-year-old’s influence has only grown stronger under Eddie Howe and he’s now one of their most important players.

Murphy is firing Newcastle into the Champions League

From starring in a mid-table campaign at Wednesday to firing Newcastle into the Champions League, it’s been some six years for Murphy.

The former Norwich star has an incredible nine goals and 13 assists this term, cementing his place down the right wing and building an excellent partnership with Kieran Trippier.

On Wednesday night, Murphy scored a thunderbolt from a tight angle as Newcastle thrashed Crystal Palace 5-0 to leapfrog Nottingham Forest into third position.

The Carabao Cup winners have hit form at the right time, winning their previous five matches, with Murphy scoring three and assisting three during that run.

Last season, the Toon played Champions League football and it looks as though another date with Europe’s elite competition is on the cards, with a former Wednesday star playing a starring role.
