Ipswich Town fans share shocking confession ahead of return to Championship, one key factor at play

Ipswich Town’s Premier League return lasted just one year, with the Tractor Boys set to play in the Championship once again in 2025/26.

The Tractor Boys won two incredible successive promotions in 2023 and 2024, rising from League One all the way up to the top flight. But their upward trajectory has been hit by a difficult year in England’s highest division.

Liam Delap’s Ipswich future looks to be decided, and there will be questions of who leads the line at Portman Road next season, with Kieran McKenna set for a busy summer with some of his bigger stars potentially following the ex-Manchester City youth player out of the door.

Nevertheless, there will be some positives for the Suffolk outfit to come out of the relegation, and fans have already started to pinpoint what they are looking forward to on their return to the Championship in August.

Ipswich supporters had to wait 22 years to see Premier League football at Portman Road once again, but it lasted just one campaign and they are now preparing for life back in the EFL.

Those in the Championship play-offs will be keen to see what the Tractor Boys fans had to say about their time in the top flight and there will be some worry that expectation does not live up to reality with the modernisation that has taken place in the league over the course of the last decade.

This has led to the question of whether Ipswich’s loyal followers are looking forward to life back in the second tier.

One Tractor Boys supporter wrote: “I’m looking forward to enjoying football again, like you say no VAR, no sideways passing for 90 minutes. My mates rip me for saying it but the Prem is awful now.”

Another put: “We all want to get to the top table of English football, but when you get there it’s all about bit of a damp squib.”

A fourth cannot wait for the sanctuary of the EFL once again: “Did not want to leave it last year. Wanted the thrill of promotion, a parade and a party. Football is about memories and moments. But would have then been happy to start the season again in the Championship. We all knew what was coming.”

“Wanted to come back down the day after we got promoted,” a fifth put.

Ipswich will be a force in the Championship next season

After <a href="http://<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-conversation="none"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Buzzing for next season already. People always think I'm just putting a brave face on it but genuinely believe Championship is more exciting and a far better experience as a match going fan. Better atmospheres, better away days. No VAR. Proper football.</p>— Ben Prickett (@prickettboy3) <a href="https://twitter.com/prickettboy3/status/1920351534333690309?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 8, 2025</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8">Leeds United and Burnley were automatically promoted, the league is just two teams from being complete for next season and Ipswich will go in with full confidence that they can make an instant return to the top flight.

With the gap widening between the Premier League and Championship makes it an even bigger challenge for those looking to unsettle the three relegated sides in 2025/26, and this will be of huge interest to McKenna.

As per The Guardian, Ipswich are likely to bring in at least £30m for Delap due to his release clause and along with parachute payments, they have the financial strength to compete at the top once again.

Nonetheless, as Luton Town experienced this season, anything can happen in the EFL and they must be ready for a fight from the first week onwards.
