‘It won’t happen’… Regis Le Bris has promised one thing as Sunderland draw Coventry City in play-offs

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has reacted to his side drawing Coventry City in the play-offs.

On the final day of the campaign, Sunderland fell to a 1-0 home defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

It now makes five defeats in a row for Sunderland, and scoring just the one in these games, meaning that they are going into the Championship play-offs with a turgid record.

There is always much emphasis in going into the play-offs in fine form, but Sunderland find themselves at the opposite end of the spectrum, having endured significant issues on the pitch in recent games, notably infront of goal.

Sunderland will face off against Coventry City in the play-offs, a draw that Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris was asked his thoughts on, especially considering the last meeting the two sides had.

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris promises that a repeat of last time out vs Coventry City ‘won’t happen’

With Sunderland now confirmed to face off against Frank Lampard’s Coventry City in the Championship play-off semi-finals, Black Cats boss Le Bris has been asked about his sides’ draw.

Le Bris, per Sunderland Echo, was also asked about the fact that, last time out against Coventry City, his side were turned over after a disappointing performance at the CBS Arena that led to a 3-0 hammering against Lampard’s side.

“It was a specific period, in this game we were really exhausted and it was the starting point of this period [of rotation],” Le Bris said.

“We felt it was really important to refresh the squad after 36, 37, 38 games, I don’t remember exactly.

“This period is over. Individual mistakes can obviously happen, but it wasn’t so often this season, and I am sure it won’t happen again.”

Since the 3-0 defeat to Coventry City, the eight succeeding games have seen Sunderland pick up just seven points, an average of less than one point per game.

Black Cats must get over away-game hurdle to stand a chance vs Coventry City

Sunderland have no doubt been handed a difficult tie by facing Coventry City in the Championship play-offs, a side that has been incredible since Lampard took over at the club.

Fortunately, because Sunderland finished 4th in the league, they have the upper-hand of the home tie in the second leg, meaning that they will have to do their best to survive at the CBS Arena, before taking the game to Coventry at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland must not have a repeat of the last time out against Coventry City, as Le Bris says, and must instead look resilient and solid at the back, whilst also showing more attacking intent on the counter.
