Luton Town fans react to Matt Bloomfield’s first win, and they finally saw what’s ‘been missing’ all season vs Portsmouth

It has been a tough season for Luton Town fans, who saw their team relegated from the Premier League last year only to be embroiled in another fight for survival now.

Many had half-expected Luton to be pushing for promotion again this season upon their return to the Championship, but all of the positives we saw from the Hatters last year have disappeared this term.

Rob Edwards lost his job at the start of 2025 after a dreadful run of results left Luton in the bottom three, with Matt Bloomfield leaving League One promotion-chasers Wycombe Wanderers to take on the role at Kenilworth Road.

It’s took a while for the team to get moving under Bloomfield, but over the last week in the Championship, fans have finally seen some progress for Luton.

Luton Town fans forgot what winning feels like

Luton grabbed a 1-0 win over Portsmouth on Saturday thanks to a first-half goal from Jordan Clark to hand Bloomfield his first win as Hatters boss. This comes on the back of a valuable point against bottom of the league Plymouth Argyle last week.

Taking to Twitter/X to celebrate the victory that moved Luton to within two points of 21st placed Hull City, Luton fans expressed their delight at finally getting three points in the bag, with some even suggesting this could be a real turning point for the season.

One fan wrote, “Great fighting spirit. You could see the passion. Three points. 33 more to play for. A run is on the way. Watch this space,” while another added, “Like this winning feeling, we played much better.”

Another commended the manager on his approach, saying, “Fair play to Bloomfield today, got the tactics practically spot on. Huge few games coming up now.”

Other supporters are more pragmatic, though. One said: “Was an awful second half; once they changed it tactically we were running round like headless chickens. But we won. Take that all day long. Hopefully we can build on this.”

Another Luton fan replied: “We ground it out and showed some of the fight that’s been missing most of the season. A much needed three points and a clean sheet. Not getting carried away at all though, we didn’t test their keeper at all.”

Too little, too late for Luton Town – they’re destined for the drop

The relegation fight is becoming very intense, and plenty of teams are in and around it down there now. But, Luton may well have left it all too late.

All season, Luton have looked devoid of ideas, drive, and passion. Thankfully, some of that returned this weekend, and it will be down to Bloomfield now to keep that going, and improve even more for the final 11 games.

Truth be told, Luton’s saving grace may well be down to the fact that other teams around them are in dire form, too. Derby County look absolutely lost, unless John Eustace can change things quickly, while Hull City’s inconsistency could cost them dearly.

The problem is, Plymouth Argyle look like they’ve got far more fight in them than Luton, and Miron Muslic certainly appears to be getting a tune out of his players. That ability to raise the standards so quickly may well end up being the difference between Plymouth and Luton come the end of the season.
