Gus Hamer and Sheffield United shone when putting in one of their best performances of the season in a 3-1 dismantling of Coventry City.

Our combined XI highlighted that the game would be tight, but it was anything but as Sheffield United raced into a 3-0 lead against Frank Lampard’s side at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United’s player ratings against Coventry City highlighted the gulf in class between the automatic promotion chasers and Coventry’s play-off hopes took a hit ahead of the top six run-in starting this weekend.

There was only one man on Sheffield United fans’ lips, though. Hamer is one of the best players in the Championship and showcased why so many view him that way on a huge night in South Yorkshire.

There were some calls to drop Rhian Brewster for Callum O’Hare, given that O’Hare had a point to prove against his former employers. However, Wilder was vindicated with his team selection and one former Sky Blues’ favourite was the outstanding figure on the night.

Many Blades fans have been frustrated at talk surrounding Hamer, who underlined his quality. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “You can see with my celebration, I didn’t really want to celebrate because I had such a good time there.

“After the game as well, they were still clapping me so I really respect them. I love the fans like I do a lot of our fans, so it’s brilliant. But I couldn’t celebrate too much.”

On the free-kick he scored: “I just want to show with my feet what I can do and I hit it nicely.”

Sheffield United and football fans around the UK were all in agreement after seeing a special moment in the 2024/25 Championship season. One fan said: “GUSTAVO HAMER, WOW. You are outrageous.”

Another remarked: “Hamer is the ultimate championship game break. What a player.”

One added: “Best performance of the season. Hamer showing why he’s the best player in the league, thought it was Peck’s best performance, improving in possession by the week. Only disappointment was to not score more and to concede such a soft goal because 3-1 flattered them big time.”

One simply put: “Gus Hamer incredible footballer”. However, it’s clear what most think about the Dutchman following a Man of the Match display against his former side.

Hamer and Tyrese Campbell shone in our match ratings, with Chris Basham piling the praise on the latter. The two managers also have huge respect and admiration for one another, too.

Lampard has spoken previously about Wilder and the games in years gone by between them, while Wilder has enjoyed ‘tremendous’ previous fixtures against the ex-Derby County figure.

Some pundits were even predicting another upset in another classic between the pair, but that ‘Premier League’ class is evident at the top end of the pitch for Wilder and co. at Championship level.

Hamer’s numbers at this level during the last two seasons at second tier level in a more advanced role are particularly outstanding, which is why he is playing below his true footballing level.
