Reading FC takeover confirmed by EFL, and fans are all in dreamland as ‘years of pain are finally over’

EFL and Reading FC club statements shared on Saturday morning confirmed the news that all Reading fans will be delighted by with the impending takeover.

Reading are set to take on Barnsley on the final day of the League One season today, with a place in the League One play-offs on the line for Noel Hunt’s side.

If Reading can better Leyton Orient’s result at Huddersfield Town with their home clash against Barnsley, they will sneak into the top-six frame.

In news that pales in comparison to today’s results, Reading confirmed the club’s sale to former Wycombe Wanderers owner Rob Couhig and Todd Trosclair on Saturday, after years of turmoil at the third tier side.

Following numerous points deductions, a relegation and transfer embargos under owner Dai Yongge, Reading and the EFL have announced the sale of the club to Redwood Holdings, and fans are all rejoicing at the long-awaited news.

Reading FC club statement confirms takeover is ‘fully expected shortly’

American Couhig will be in the Reading stands today, amongst the 21,000-plus strong crowd at the SCL Stadium this afternoon, poised to be one of the most emotional days in club history.

The Reading faithful have waited years for the dreaded Yongge era to curtail, with the transaction including Yongge’s shares of the Royals, the SCL Stadium as well as their Bearwood Training Ground.

His time at the helm has seen the Royals docked six points for financial concerns last term, in which they finished 17th in the third tier, which also saw the Royals’ Women’s team withdrawn from the Women’s Championship and dropped into the fifth tier.

Yongge’s tenure has been labelled as “disgraceful” by Steve Sidwell, and Jobi McAnuff had made a call for action with the club on the brink of extinction, but today the Royals headlines are positive for once.

After previous attempts to buy Reading last year fell through, after a breakdown in negotiations, Couhig’s takeover was confirmed on Saturday morning, much to the delight of the Royals faithful.

The League One outfit said in a club statement: “Reading Football Club is pleased to announce the sale in principle of the club to Redwood Holdings Limited.

“The takeover includes the Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Ground.

“The formal completion of the transaction is subject to final legal technicalities but is fully expected to be completed shortly.”

An EFL statement added: “The EFL has received confirmation from all parties that a sale has been agreed in principle with Redwood Holdings Limited, with the transaction expected to be completed shortly, once final legal technicalities have been completed.”

With Christmas coming early for the Royals diehards after years of protesting, the fanbase took to social media ahead of the final day visit of Barnsley, to share their raw emotions about the long-awaited news.
