Russell Martin looks like he is set to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy and become the next Leicester City manager.

Reports have claimed that Martin will join Leicester imminently, with Van Nistelrooy set to be sacked after failing to keep the Foxes in the Premier League.

The former Southampton manager returns to the dugout after being dismissed by the Saints earlier this season and will be tasked with guiding Leicester to an immediate return to the top flight, and earn himself a second Championship promotion in three seasons.

A number of clubs have been linked with appointing the 39-year-old, and ahead of a pending move to the King Power Stadium, has told the club when he wants to be in charge

Russell Martin wants to be at Leicester City for the start of the season

Leicester can’t afford to slack next season and with a potential points deduction looming over the Foxes, work must begin immediately.

Martin is out of work already but during an appearance on The Rest is Football podcast earlier this year, told Gary Lineker he wants a full pre-season under his belt.

He said: “I hope to be in [next job] for day one of pre-season. Social context is really important, people forget that in football.

“The culture of the club, what it’s about, what it’s used to, I’m not sure there’s certain clubs I could go into and ask for real patience when the goalkeeper is standing on the ball for 25 seconds and they want it put forward quickly because that’s what they’ve been used to.

“I am aware that I’ve probably limited my job options somewhat.”

When will Leicester City return to pre-season training?

At the time of writing, Leicester are yet to unveil their plans for the 2025 pre-season plans.

The 2025/26 Championship campaign begins on the weekend of August 8-10, with games taking place across that weekend.

Leicester are expected to be among the frontrunners for promotion but Martin and the squad will have lots of work to do to prove themselves worthy contenders.
