Sheffield United taught Sheffield Wednesday a ‘lesson’ in Steel City derby win, Owls ‘lost their heads’

The marquee Championship fixture of the weekend will see Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday clash on Sunday afternoon.

It will be the final Steel City derby of the season and potentially the last for Sheffield Wednesday’s manager.

Danny Rohl has a £5m release clause in his contract and it’s understood he will leave the Owls in the summer with Southampton circling.

In what is potentially his final season at Hillsborough, Rohl has a chance to secure Wednesday a place in the Championship play-offs.

They sat 11th in the division prior to the weekend’s action getting underway, but only five points adrift of the top six.

However, if they are to make a late push into the play-offs, Sheffield Wednesday will have to put together a much better run of form than we have seen from them in recent months, starting with their meeting against Sheffield United on Sunday.

How Sheffield United taught Sheffield Wednesday a lesson in Steel City derby

This will be the second time the old rivals have gone head-to-head in the Championship this term.

The previous meeting took place at Bramall Lane on November 10th, 2024.

Tyrese Campbell put the home side 1-0 up after 50 minutes, and Sheffield United were able to hold out for the victory from there.

It was a scrappy clash, and after Chris Wilder and co. secured the victory, Ryan Dilks and Justin Peach discussed the game on the Second Tier podcast.

When doing so, they suggested that Wednesday were taught a ‘lesson’ in discipline from Wilder’s men.

Peach said: “I really thought it was a lesson in discipline from Sheffield United. It wasn’t an open game, it was almost a typical derby where the atmosphere is pumped, the football’s not as sexy as you hope it’s going to be.

“It’s a who blinks first moment, and obviously Sheffield Wednesday blinked first and Sheffield United took advantage. They were fully deserving of this win. Discipline is what got United the three points. Not necessarily managing emotions, but tactically they were spot on.”

Dilks then suggested that Wednesday ‘lost their heads’: “They got their chance and they took it, and then killed the game excellently… they by and large kept Wednesday at arm’s length… they played the game, not the occasion. I don’t think Wednesday dealt with it as well as United.

“Particularly after going behind, I think Wednesday seemed to have lost their heads a little bit. That’s where it helps having an experienced coach like Chris Wilder.”

What Danny Rohl and Chris Wilder have said about Steel City derby

Wilder mocked Rohl following the Blades’ 1-0 win earlier in the campaign.

But when speaking ahead of Sunday’s meeting, as per BBC Sport, the German insisted he would not waste his energy talking about it again.

He said: “I look to my team, which has shown big character in the last two games, two wins. I love my team as I said after the Norwich game.

“I think what other guys thought about me and what they are doing after games is not my problem or my topic. I will not waste my energy to talk or think about this.

“For me it’s about coming with a lot of power and intensity. In the last two games we showed this.”

Meanwhile, Wilder is expecting another scrappy encounter when the duo meet on March 16th.

He said: “Rarely have I seen a free-flowing game between the sides and I imagine this will be the same.

“We have an opportunity of doing the double over our nearest and dearest rivals for the first time in a long time and they will obviously want to rectify the performance and result in November.”
