Sheffield Wednesday fans finally have something to cheer about this summer, but there’s a catch

There’s not been much cause for celebration around Sheffield Wednesday this summer, but the Owls did just take one positive step.

Financial chaos. Failed takeover bids. Managerial U-turns. It’s all been going on at Sheffield Wednesday right now, and fans are really suffering.

With Dejphon Chansiri failing to make payments on time, the Owls are under a transfer embargo and facing further punishments before the season begins.

There’s also great uncertainty around Danny Rohl’s future, with the Wednesday manager expected to be relieved of his duties soon.

But, as pre-season preparations continue, Owls fans do at least have one shred of positivity to cling to this week thanks to an impressive victory on the pitch.

Sheffield Wednesday pick up first pre-season win

So far this summer, makeshift Sheffield Wednesday sides have fallen to 3-1 defeats against both Stocksbridge Park Steels and Lincoln United.

Admittedly, the squads for those games were made up of Sheffield Wednesday youngsters. Still, the fact they couldn’t get a result against Non-League opposition was cause for concern.

However, the Owls have now finally picked up their first win in pre-season, bagging a 3-0 victory over York City.

As per Joe Crann, the goals came from established first-team star Svante Ingelsson, promising youth prospect Sean Fusire, and fellow Under-21 starlet Reece Johnson.

Obviously, there’s the caveat that this is a friendly against a team in the National League, but given the current situation at Sheffield Wednesday, a win’s a win.

Svante Ingelsson could be key for the Owls this season

With the number of players departing Hillsborough this summer, putting together a Sheffield Wednesday XI for the start of the season could be a challenge.

However, it may well work in Svante Ingelsson’s favour. The Swedish midfielder looked promising last season, but struggled to make a first-team place his own.

Danny Rohl previously discussed Ingelsson and suggested it may take some time for him to settle in England and reach his peak levels.

With a season already under his belt and less competition for places, we could see Ingelsson become a key figure for the Owls in 2025/26. Wednesday could do far worse than to lean on the hard-working, athletic, creative midfielder, that’s for sure.
