Sunderland fans all make same point about Eliezer Mayenda during Championship play-off clash vs Coventry

Sunderland travelled to Coventry City on May 9 for the first of two Championship play-off semi-finals, and fans have had a lot to say.

The Championship play-offs are now in full swing, with Sheffield United already earning themselves what looks very likely to be a place in the final following their comfortable win over Bristol City on Thursday.

The Blades, barring a complete collapse in the return fixture, are set to face either Sunderland or Coventry City at Wembley later this month.

Ahead of the tie, Frank Lampard was looking to end Coventry’s recent Wembley woes, but had a daunting task ahead of him.

Trai Hume and Jobe Bellingham, who has transfer interest, were among the Black Cats stars aiming to make an impact at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

When all was said and done, Sunderland beat Coventry City 2-1.

Eliezer Mayenda passing questioned by Sunderland fans vs Coventry City

It was a cagey first 45, with neither team carving out a clear chance before the break.

Sunderland looked a lot more threatening in the second half and eventually took the lead in the 67th minute via Wilson Isidor.

Their lead lasted just a couple of minutes, but Eliezer Mayenda eventually scored a late winner, pouncing on a mistake from Milan van Ewijk.

While the 20-year-old netted a major goal, some fans were still questioning his passing on the day.

One fan wrote: “We’d be a lot more effective on the counter if Mayenda knew how to pass a football.”

Another Sunderland fan stated: “Mayenda had to play the ball earlier there.”

“Mayenda seems to be refusing to pass to Isidor,” a third supporter stated.

A fourth tweeted: “That goal against Bristol City was good, but if Mayenda could pass the ball a bit more on counters, I’d appreciate it.”

Another Sunderland supporter simply demanded: “Make the pass, Mayenda.”

“Fairly solid defensively, Mayenda needs to pass it off on occasion when Isidor is up with him. A 1-2 is all we need to break them down,” a sixth added.

Will Wilson Isidor or Eliezer Mayenda be dropped for Chris Rigg vs Coventry

Mayenda starting the fixture on Friday came as something of a surprise, with Le Bris switching to a 4-4-2 formation out of position.

The forward’s connection with Isidor wasn’t really there for much of the game, but, for larger periods anyway, it helped Sunderland execute their gameplan well.

The second leg will take place at the Stadium of Light next week, and it’ll be interesting to see if Le Bris makes any changes.

Chris Rigg was dropped on May 9 but could come back into the team for Isidor, who was taken off in the 76th minute for the teenager.
