Sunderland youngster ranks amongst Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal in key statistic after midfielder’s remarkable footballing rise.
Sunderland have become recognised within the English Football League for their youth-first footballing philosophy.
Throughout owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ tenure, with his sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, the Black Cats’ model of youthful exuberance has seen them recruit and develop some of football’s greatest future prospects.
Former Birmingham City youngster Jobe Bellingham, bought by Sunderland in 2023, is now wanted by Borussia Dortmund after cementing himself as one of the Championship’s best talents at only 19-years-old.
Academy graduate Tommy Watson is set to join Brighton in a £10m transfer this summer.
Another shining example of Sunderland’s youth-first approach is that of Chris Rigg, wanted by Manchester United after his remarkable campaign, and it is Rigg who has been mentioned in the same breath as a certain Barcelona superstar.

Chris Rigg ranks amongst Barcelona starlet in wonderkid statistic
Sunderland starlet Rigg made his professional debut for the Black Cats under Tony Mowbray, against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup, in which he became the youngest outfielder in Sunderland history.
After his debut, English football veteran Mowbray said of Rigg: “He was put on the pitch because he deserves to be on the pitch. He’s talented, he can pass the ball well with his left foot and he looks smooth when he’s travelling with the ball.”
Rigg’s second appearance came in the following FA Cup round as a substitute against Fulham, in which the then-15-year-old had a goal ruled out for offside.
Since then, boyhood Newcastle United fan Rigg has exploded as an elite young prospect; becoming Sunderland’s youngest ever goalscorer, winning Championship Goal of September this season and scoring on his England Under-19s debut to send the Young Lions into the Euro finals.
The 17-year-old’smeteoric ascent to footballing stardom has seen Rigg mentioned in the same breath as Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal, the La Masia graduate who spearheaded Spain’s 2024 Euros victory.
Statistics emerged via CIES Football recently, with the Euro 2024 Young Player of the Tournament topping the pile for most official games played at senior level for footballers born in or after 2007.
Wide-forward Yamal has averaged a staggering 59.7 games per year since his senior debut – in April 2023 as a substitute against Real Betis – with 117 official senior appearances made at the time the statistic was posted.
Rigg, however, ranks five places below the Barcelona starlet, featuring in 65 senior matches and averaging 28.7 per year since his senior debut against Shrewsbury.
| Key statistic | Chris Rigg | Lamine Yamal |
| Games played | 39 | 28 |
| Goals | 4 | 6 |
| Assists | 1 | 11 |
| Minutes played | 2879 | 2332 |
| Estimated market value | £14m | £154m |
Both Rigg and Yamal have been in stellar form this season, made even more impressive given both don’t turn 18-years-old until this summer. The Barcelona starlet has six goals and 11 assists to his name in 26 starts for Hansi Flick’s La Liga title favourites.
Central-midfielder Rigg has been an imperative component of Regis Le Bris’ promotion push, featuring 39 times for the Black Cats this term, notching five goal contributions in the process as Sunderland sit fourth in the Championship table.

Sunderland ace Chris Rigg wanted by Premier League and Bundesliga clubs
Rigg is widely-regarded as a generational prospect in football and has been dubbed to be a Premier League regular in the near future. His audacious backheel winner in the regional battle against Middlesbrough was the perfect illustration of Rigg’s technical, and mental, footballing qualities.
After winning games in the Championship and on the international stage as a teenager, some of Europe’s elite have been tracking the Sunderland starlet; with Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and Arsenal all circling to secure the youngster’s services this summer.
Rigg’s current Black Cats deal expires in the summer of 2027, and if Le Bris’ side fail to earn promotion back to the Premier League this season, then in the upcoming transfer window they may find it too difficult to swerve the advances of those super clubs.
EFL Analysis’ chief football transfer expert Graeme recently revealed to TBR Football that a host of Premier League and Bundesliga sides are confirmed admirers of the 17-year-old.
With Le Bris’ side destined for the Championship play-offs, their only real bargaining chip to retain Rigg on Wearside is to become a top flight side themselves next season, but even that may not be enough given the sufficient interest in an elite prospect for not only today, but years ahead.
