Supercomputer slashes Sheffield United’s faint promotion hopes as Chris Wilder deals with 1.98% task

Sheffield United’s small chances of promotion this season have once again taken a hit, as Chris Wilder’s new aims for the Blades could be far less optimistic.

Chris Wilder’s homecoming with the Blades was wrecked as Charlton Athletic beat Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

The same issues continue to haunt Sheffield United, who were unable to find the back of the net for a fifth successive Championship game.

Wilder’s side’s inability to break down Charlton Athletic came back to haunt them in the dying embers, with Addicks forward Isaac Olaofe finding the back of the net, tucking the ball underneath a disparaging Michael Cooper.

The defeat has proven that Wilder has far greater concerns than initially expected, and while some expected the new Sheffield United boss to revive any potential promotion hopes, the OPTA Analyst supercomputer has suggested that the chances of that are minuscule.

Supercomputer outlines slim Sheffield United promotion chances

The supercomputer claimed that a play-offs finish was 14.86% likely when Chris Wilder took over from Ruben Selles at Sheffield United, but that figure has since plummeted.

A play-off finish is now 9.52% likely for Sheffield United, making it a 5.34% decrease following the defeat against Charlton Athletic.

Automatic promotion chances stood at 4.54% before this weekend, but now it is at a lowly 1.98%.

Many Sheffield United fans are now dreading the potential of relegation from the Championship, and that now stands at 17.32% chance, which is more likely than Charlton Athletic.

Task at hand will provide many challenges to Chris Wilder

Sheffield United fans were jubilant when Chris Wilder took over from Ruben Selles, and while it was built up to be a party atmosphere at Bramall Lane to welcome his return, that optimism was brought to a shuddering halt by Charlton Athletic.

Many blamed Selles for the pointless start in the Championship, but this weekend’s performance has led to questions over the players.

Wilder has plenty of work to do with his current Sheffield United side. The spine of his 2024/25 season has been ripped apart, so it is not a simple job of reinstating the success from last year. A rebuild is needed, and hopefully Wilder can lead it.
