In a chaotic end to Coventry’s Premier League dream, a Sunderland pitch invasion saw fans confront Frank Lampard amidst the heartbreak.
Dan Ballard’s goal in the final moments of extra time saw the Black Cats secure a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light, booking their place at Wembley by winning 3-2 on aggregate.
A goal by Ephron Mason-Clark saw the Sky Blues win the match after 90 minutes, sending the semi-final tie to extra time after Sunderland won the first leg 2-1.
Ballard’s goal sparked euphoria among the Sunderland fans, with some fans even making their way onto the pitch at full-time.

The players were also elated, with Amad Diallo’s eight-word message delighting Sunderland fans.
One supporter tried to get a picture with Lampard, who understandably pushed them away before others stepped in too.
Despite the unsavoury scenes from Lampard and Coventry’s perspective, talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan has hailed Sunderland for their quick response.
Simon Jordan praises Sunderland’s response to pitch invasion
“The fact is that Sunderland were very quick to react to it, and they were very quick to get stewards out on the field,” Jordan said.
“They were very quick to do what they possibly could, and it wasn’t a big pitch invasion.
“It wasn’t massive, it wasn’t at Hillsborough a couple of years ago when all the Sheffield Wednesday fans piled onto the pitch after winning their play-off semi-final, so it was a more muted response.
“But there was always going to be people that believe that things don’t apply to them. People that think they can do as they want and that they’re entitled to do it.
“That is society. Why do people go and burgle people’s houses? Why do people do things that they shouldn’t do in life? If we understood why they would do it, then we’d be like them, wouldn’t we?
“They wanted to parody Frank Lampard, they wanted to catch him at the moment and Frank said ‘Get out of it’. I don’t blame him.”
Frank Lampard’s reaction to play-off heartbreak
After the game, Lampard told talkSPORT: “It was tough, but we were the better team. It was a really tough atmosphere before the game, the first five minutes.
“But after that, we controlled major portions of it, as we did the first game. I’m disappointed, but proud of what the players produced because when we came here, we silenced a lot of the atmosphere.

“Second half, the atmosphere was gone. It was wave after wave of us with the ball in their half.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t get a result because as football, they score more goals in the end because we maybe don’t take a few of our chances. But the players are incredible.”
While Lampard ultimately couldn’t guide Coventry City to the play-off final, his arrival certainly sparked a significant turnaround in their season.
A sentiment backed by Sky Sports’ Paul Merson who agreed with Frank Lampard’s assessment.
Taking over in November with the Sky Blues declining to 17th place, just above the relegation zone, Lampard oversaw an exceptional climb up the Championship table.

He ingrained a new sense of belief and tactical organisation, leading Coventry to an impressive run of form that saw them secure a fifth-place finish and a play-off spot – something many considered optimistic upon his appointment.
While the play-off heartbreak against Sunderland ultimately defined their season’s end, the journey to that point has been a testament to Lampard.
