The reason why Middlesbrough can’t dip into free agent market to solve Rob Edwards’ selection headache

Rob Edwards won’t be able to use the free agent market to solve a potential crisis at Middlesbrough.

There hasn’t been much to complain about after Boro’s 2-1 win against West Bromwich Albion leaves them top of the Championship table.

While history suggests that Middlesbrough won’t get promoted, the Teesside club is enjoying the ride.

Edwards has met his first stumbling block, however, and could be left scrambling around for a defensive option.

Dael Fry, George Edmundson and Darragh Lenihan are all doubts for the game against Southampton, and while there are free agents available, they won’t be of any use to Boro.

Why can’t Middlesbrough sign a free agent?

Middlesbrough won’t be able to sign free agents as they already have the maximum number of players registered.

EFL rules permit clubs to name a total of 25 players in their squad, and any changes are only allowed to be made in ‘exceptional circumstances’.

The same rules apply to any players out on loan. Adilson Malanda is still shining in the MLS, while Neto Borges is on loan at Bristol City.

Neither one of those can be recalled and registered within the squad.

Who can fill in at centre-back for Middlesbrough?

If no option returns in time for the visit to Southampton, Edwards will be forced to play some senior members out of position, or turn to the academy.

Matt Targett played centre-back for the majority of the game at the Riverside Stadium last time out; while Sunderland loanee Alan Browne could also fill in.

Youngsters like Archie Baptiste and George McCormick could also step up from the academy if they need to.
