Tom Brady had plan to give Birmingham City players ‘significant competitive advantage’, it’s clearly worked

Birmingham City’s domination of League One has been remarkable and they owe a lot to Tom Brady.

The Blues suffered relegation to the third tier of English football for the first time since 1995 in the 2023/24 season.

Following their drop down to League One, Tom Brady made a promise to Birmingham City fans that has now come true.

With less than two months of the season left to play, the Midlands outfit are on course to clinch the league title with ease.

They are already 12 points clear of second place, having a game in hand on both Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham.

Birmingham broke a League One record earlier this month and are also set to take on Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy final next month.

Their success, meanwhile, has clearly been helped by Brady and his role off the pitch.

How Tom Brady improved Birmingham City players

Brady is an NFL icon, winning a staggering seven Super Bowls, being named the Super Bowl MVP on five separate occasions, and picking up countless more individual and team awards throughout his career.

What was perhaps most impressive about Brady’s career is the fact he did not retire until February 2023 when he was 45 years of age.

According to a study cited by Business Insider, the average NFL player calls it a day when they are 27.6 years old.

It was a remarkable achievement for Brady to stay at the top of the game for as long as he did, and he has passed his knowledge down to Birmingham, playing a key role in their training and performance.

Speaking back in August 2024, as per the Mirror, chairman Tom Wagner detailed how the NFL legend planned to help give them a ‘significant competitive advantage’.

He said: “We have had long conversations about what the infrastructure can do to benefit player performance and I’m not going to get into Tom’s trade secrets but he has a lot of views on how to use that as a significant competitive advantage in a pursuit of excellence on the pitch.

“Listening to his comments they really resonate and he has given a lot of thought of what we can do to make that infrastructure to support the players.

“The hope and objective is for Birmingham City for players to come and extend their careers, play for a long time, because we will be helping them to do those things with the same processes Tom used throughout his career. What he did was unprecedented but it doesn’t mean it can’t be replicated.”

Whatever Brady has done behind the scenes is clearly working so far given how successful the club have been in 2024/25.

Birmingham City can set another League One record

Brady’s impact could even result in the Blues setting a League One record in the coming months.

With 10 games of the 2024/25 season to go, Birmingham can, in theory, pick up another 30 points this term.

Should they do so to end with 113, it would see them completely smash the current record for most points in the third tier since it was rebranded.

Even if they do drop points in a couple of fixtures, however, there’s still a real chance they take the crown from Wolves.
