‘Unlucky’ former Sheffield Wednesday man finds his feet with National League move

Former Sheffield Wednesday attacker Rolando Aarons has once again returned to English football, this time moving to the National League.

Sheffield Wednesday have housed several players who have gone on to struggle at S6.

One player who never managed to kick on once joining up with the Owls was Rolando Aarons, who, in a loan move from Newcastle United in January 2019, struggled to get going at the club.

Aarons notched 10 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, where he notably scored in a 2-0 away win against a beleaguered Bolton Wanderers, but was then hit with a hamstring injury that ended his spell with the club prematurely.

Since then, Aarons has found himself at Huddersfield Town, Motherwell, and a host of foreign clubs before returning to the English game with a National League side.

Former Sheffield Wednesday attacker Rolando Aarons joins Morecambe

It has been confirmed that Rolando Aarons has joined Morecambe in a permanent deal, six months after he left NK Celje in the Slovenian top division.

Aarons has found himself at nine separate clubs in his time, and he will hope that he can kick on at National League side Morecambe, who have been given a new lease of life after their takeover.

The 29-year-old winger notably has 25 appearances at Championship level, while also having Premier League experience with Newcastle United, where he played 18 games and scored two goals, including a strike against Tottenham Hotspur.

Injuries proved to be the Achilles heel for Aarons during his short stint at S6, and if he can stay fit with Morecambe, hopefully he can rediscover his form.

Rolando Aarons has been very ‘unlucky’ in his career

Rolando Aarons has seen very little success in his career, having been hampered by injuries at many of his clubs.

The former Sheffield Wednesday man himself knows that high-level football has been taken away from him in circumstances out of his control, which he spoke about in 2019 in an interview with The Athletic.

“I just wept, thinking, ‘I’m the most unlucky footballer in the world.’ I felt helpless.

“I got into a dark place, mentally. I didn’t know anyone else who’d been through that experience so I was trying to do it all myself.”

Sheffield Wednesday fans, as well as Newcastle United supporters, will be keen to see him back on his feet and hopefully playing regular football in the National League, which will potentially provide him with the opportunity to get his career back on track.
