Acun Ilicali is already annoying Championship rival chiefs over wanted Hull City man, fans will love it

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has made his stance on player sales clear, with Championship rivals finding it ‘difficult’ to sign players from the Tigers.

Hull City are currently under a transfer and loan fee restriction for three transfer windows.

Acun Ilicali is confident that Hull City’s embargo will be lifted; however, such a decision may not reach its conclusion until the 2025/26 Championship season gets underway.

As a result of Hull City’s prohibitions in the current window, it has led to an alternative transfer approach to be taken by the club, something that has been felt by opposition clubs.

For example, Portsmouth are keen to bring Abu Kamara back to Fratton Park, however, the Pompey Sporting Director has spoken about why doing business with Hull City at this moment is proving to be incredibly ‘difficult’.

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali’s approach to selling Abu Kamara

As we have seen with Dejphon Chansriri this summer, Sheffield Wednesday have had to sell players for a fraction of their value in order to continue running the club, but Hull City aren’t quite in that situation.

Acun Ilicali was handed his restriction by the EFL for what can be described as mismanagement with payments due to clubs, but such payments were made instantly once the issue was brought to his attention.

As a result, some clubs who thought they may be able to snap up a Tigers star have soon found out that Ilicali is not willing to accept low-ball offers this summer.

Portsmouth Sporting Director, Richard Hughes, spoke about their interest in Abu Kamara and why such a deal with Hull City is proving to be difficult.

“It’s always really tough to do it, and I think you take Hull as a sort of working example – they’ve gone under an embargo, and I think the natural reaction would be they have to sell players,” he told BBC Solent.

“But, also, you can’t lose sight of the fact that they may not be able to replace them and I think that’s probably the flip side of that coin – so that becomes really difficult.

“So, he’s Hull’s player, we completely respect that, and is he a player we’d be interested in? Yes, absolutely. Is it one that we’ll be able to do? We have to wait and see and see how that pans out.

“Again, when you talk about these unknown factors, you look at Hull’s situation and, again, there’s an incredible amount of grey areas in that sort of set up to get a deal done.”

Acun Ilicali must prioritise keeping key stars

This season will throw up several difficulties for Hull City, particularly in the goalscoring department.

The 2024/25 Championship season saw the Tigers finish as the lowest goalscorers in the division, and since then, they have lost top scorer Joao Pedro.

Admittedly, Abu Kamara didn’t provide a consistent goalscoring threat last season, however, he is a valuable asset who must be kept around the club, unless they are able to break even on the winger and replace him with a top free agent/loan.

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali needs to be shrewd this summer with his business, particularly regarding sales.
