Best free agents Sheffield Wednesday could sign after EFL restrictions lifted include 33-goal star

Sheffield Wednesday should be given some more freedom in the transfer market after the EFL lifts restrictions.

The Owls have been hampered by financial issues and placed under multiple embargoes by the EFL this summer.

However, Sheffield Wednesday are set to be handed a boost on that front soon, though some issues remain.

The Star report that the Yorkshire outfit will receive a hefty Premier League solidarity payment this week, which they will use to pay off multiple debts.

It means embargoes should be lifted, and the current £7,000-a-week wage cap they are operating under is expected to be removed.

A ‘fee restriction’ sanction on any potential transfers would remain in place until 2027, but it should give Wednesday more room to manoeuvre in the market.

So, we have taken a look at the best free agents available for Sheffield Wednesday to sign this summer.

Best free agents Sheffield Wednesday could sign

Grady Diangana

A former West Ham United academy product, Grady Diangana, most recently lined out for West Bromwich Albion in the Championship.

He was released earlier this summer after scoring four and assisting three in 34 second-tier matches last term.

Diangana is a natural right winger but was used largely in the attacking midfield role last season, so he could be a replacement for Josh Windass.

He’s not as prolific as Windass, but even with embargoes lifted, Wednesday will still be limited by the calibre of players they can attract.

Duncan Watmore

Duncan Watmore is another experienced Championship player still available for free.

There was a suggestion he could sign for Blackpool, though their local media recently squashed that rumour.

Watmore has shone in the second tier with Middlesbrough and, most recently, Millwall, scoring five times for the Lions last term.

In total, he has played 174 games in the Championship, scoring 33 and assisting 13.

Watmore is an incredibly versatile player, able to operate all across the frontline.

Samuel Kalu

Perhaps the biggest risk from the players mentioned, Samuel Kalu has been out of contract since 2024.

He is a well-travelled player, having featured for the likes of Girondins Bordeaux in France and KAA Gent in Belgium.

Kalu’s stint in Gent was his most prolific, netting 10 and assisting 15 in 55 matches.

Again, he’s not the most exciting signing, but Wednesday desperately need fresh legs and are limited by what business they can do.
