John Eustace has big Derby County transfer decision to make this summer, Paul Warne will be keen

Derby County have already made their first move in the summer transfer window, and after their retained list was released just over a week ago, the first squad member has departed the club.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing joined MK Dons on Tuesday afternoon after three years at Pride Park. The winger joined the League Two outfit on a free transfer, despite having a year left on his contract in the East Midlands.

He has reunited with his former Rams boss, Paul Warne, who struggled in his last few months in the Championship but it seems unlikely that he will be only player to switch DE24 for Milton Keynes in the coming weeks and months.

John Eustace is preparing for a busy transfer window, with new faces desperately needed to ensure that Derby are not staring the threat of relegation in the face but more players will need moving out, and one summer signing from last year will be fighting his corner to stay.

Ben Osborn may struggle to keep his place at Derby County this summer

After re-joining the Rams 20 years after leaving as a child, Ben Osborn was one of the most exciting arrivals ahead of the club’s return to the Championship.

The midfielder, who can also play at left wing-back, had a decent start to life at Pride Park but injuries soon started to mount, and he found himself on the sidelines more than he would have liked to – just months after playing Premier League football with Sheffield United.

His campaign on the pitch ended early, as he found himself in the treatment room with a hamstring problem before failing to come off the bench in the final four games of the season as Derby survived on the final day.

With Eustace needing to find improvements throughout the squad, Osborn’s injury issues will make it tough for the 30-year-old to keep his place with the Rams, and similar to Mendez-Laing, his time in black-and-white may come to a premature end.

Paul Warne will eagerly be watching any movement at Pride Park

After Eustace joined Derby County back in February, performances improved dramatically and supporters are very excited for next season with over 20,000 season tickets already sold.

But there is a lot of work to do once the transfer window opens on June 1, and Warne will be keeping a keen eye on some of those who have a history of playing under him as MK Dons prepare for life in League Two once again.

Osborn, while he has spent his entire career in the Premier League and Championship, will be one that Milton Keynes will be looking at if Eustace does decide to move him on, with an exciting project building at Stadium MK.
