Sheffield United’s £10m flop has the chance to make amends with a £220m goal

Sheffield United learned who they will be facing in the Championship play-off final as Sunderland found the back of the net late against Coventry City to run out 3-2 winners on aggregate.

Ephron Mason-Clark’s strike had taken the game to extra-time after the Black Cats picked up a 2-1 win at the CBS Arena on Friday, but Dan Ballard’s spectacular header in the final seconds of the game was enough to take Regis Le Bris’ side to Wembley.

However, they face a very difficult challenge in the Blades on May 24 after Chris Wilder masterminded his team to a dominant 6-0 aggregate victory over Bristol City.

Sheffield United’s poor end of the season form denied them the opportunity of winning automatic promotion to the Premier League, but they have shown their quality over the course of the last two games and Sunderland will have to be cautious in their approach.

Nevertheless, for one Blade, the final should be seen as an opportunity to put his poor start to life at Bramall Lane behind him.

Tom Cannon can finally justify some of his £10m fee with a goal at Wembley for Sheffield United

It’s not been the sparkling first few months at Sheffield United that Tom Cannon would have expected after he left Leicester City in the January transfer window for £10m, according to The Athletic.

He scored only once in the regular season for the South Yorkshire outfit, despite finding the back of the net nine times for Stoke City during the first half of the campaign – including four in one game against Portsmouth back in October.

Opportunities have been given to the 22-year-old on countless occasions and it is clear to see that Wilder has belief that he can find form, but so far he has not found that killer instinct that Sheffield United have needed.

But, with Wembley on the horizon, Cannon could still play a major role in the Blades’ season and score the winner in the Championship play-off final to take his club back to the Premier League just a year after relegation.

As per BBC Sport, the winner of the game will win a minimum of £220m in prize money, a share of the Premier League’s television deal, centralised commercial fees, facility fees, etc., handing the Republic of Ireland the chance to become a hero.

Chris Wilder has a decision to make as to who partners Kieffer Moore at Wembley

Kieffer Moore was excellent against Bristol City in the Blades’ semi-final clashes, and he set the tone for Wilder’s side throughout the 180 minutes. However, there is now a decision to be made as to who partners him at Wembley.

Tyreece Campbell ended the season as Sheffield United’s top scorer, but he has not been incredibly consistent throughout the year and Cannon has had his obvious struggles.

Wilder mixed up his choices in the last two games, and neither striker was able to match the levels that Moore showed and it will come down to who performs better in training leading up to the final.

If Cannon does get that chance, then he must grasp the opportunity with both hands and finally prove to everyone why Sheffield United took such a punt on him and the best way to do that is by finding the back of the net.
