After Tilman Fertitta emerged as a contender to take over Sheffield Wednesday from Dejphon Chansiri, Owls fans will be excited to know about his previous Chelsea bid.

Dejphon Chansiri’s tenure as Sheffield Wednesday owner seems to be coming to an end, with the club close to a takeover.

Sheffield Wednesday have been plagued with issues throughout the summer, building up to the 2025/26 Championship season, with Chansiri not having adequate funds to pay players and staff, an issue that looks set to hamper the club, with a handful of first-teamers merely days from walking out.

An agreement has been reached with at least one party to take over Sheffield Wednesday, with reports circulating that Tilman Fertitta is a likely contender to succeed Chansiri.

The US businessman, known for his multitude of businesses in the sport, hotel, and casino industry, which have helped him accumulate a multi-billion dollar fortune, but the 68-year-old has previously shown his intent with a previous interest in buying Chelsea.

The time Tilman Fertitta attempted to buy Chelsea

Before Tilman Fertitta turned his attention to Sheffield Wednesday, the billionaire showed a previous interest in acquiring Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022, according to Sky News.

At the time of Todd Boehly’s bid, Fertitta was named among other interested parties, although he did have connections with the now-Chelsea owner.

Because of Fertitta’s extensive experience in sports, overseeing the Houston Rockets, he wanted to boost his portfolio with a Champions League-winning club.

The takeover of Chelsea cost Boehly £4.25 billion in the end, but it wasn’t the price tag that deterred Fertitta from further pursuing his interests.

What Sheffield Wednesday fans can take from Tilman Fertitta’s previous Chelsea interest

During his career, in and out of sport, Tilman Fertitta has shown himself to be a risk-taker, but also an incredibly ambitious figure.

Hopefully, Fertitta’s reported interest in Sheffield Wednesday means that he wishes to impart his ambition on the club at a time when it is desperately calling out for direction and a long-term strategy.

Fertitta’s previous ideas to acquire Chelsea ultimately stemmed from the global reach of the brand, and he will be keen to replicate that with Sheffield Wednesday.

The US businessman has a record of putting his money where his mouth is – there is no doubt that he has been advised about the sleeping giants that lie in South Yorkshire, a club crying out for backing. There is every chance that Fertitta is the man to provide that.
