Sheffield Wednesday have seven-figure incentive to part ways with Danny Rohl, but there’s one problem

Danny Rohl has only just returned to Sheffield Wednesday, but there are already question marks over his future.

The German has spent much of the summer so far away from Hillsborough after much speculation he could leave.

However, Danny Rohl returned to training with the Owls this week, which is not thought to have gone down too well with some at the club.

It has since emerged that some Sheffield Wednesday players are not happy with Rohl, nor are a number of the club’s fans.

They may not have to see the former Bayern Munich coach for much longer, however.

It comes with recent reports that Sheffield Wednesday’s hierarchy are questioning Rohl’s future.

Why Sheffield Wednesday may want Danny Rohl gone

On the field, Rohl has proven himself to be an excellent addition for Wednesday.

He helped save the club from relegation in 2023/24 and, despite a lack of backing last term, guided the Yorkshire outfit to a mid-table finish in the Championship.

But after his absence over the summer, it’s easy to see why some at the club may want him gone.

Away from his decision to walk away, however, there is another key reason the club could decide to move him on.

Sheffield Wednesday are selling players below market value to try and aid their current financial crisis – two leaving for a total of £3m this week.

But as EFL Analysis revealed earlier this year, Rohl has a release clause worth nearly £5m – over £2m more than they have earned from player sales this summer.

Who will want Danny Rohl now

The club would no doubt be keen to net near £5m if another club decides to activate his release clause.

However, the problem is that a lot of the teams linked with the German have now appointed new managers.

Middlesbrough have replaced Michael Carrick with Rob Edwards, Southampton have appointed Will Still, and Marti Cifuentes is the new Leicester City boss.

Rohl was linked with a return to Germany, and that door could still be open, but in terms of interest from England, a lot of potential destinations are no longer viable.
