Sunderland break unwanted record ahead of Championship play-offs, it hasn’t set a good precedent for Regis Le Bris

Sunderland have entered the Championship play-offs with one incredibly disappointing record broken.

The Championship play-offs are underway, with Sheffield United beating Bristol City 3-0 in the first leg.

Attentions now turn towards Sunderland and Coventry City, who face off at the CBS Arena in the first leg.

Coventry City boss Frank Lampard is keen not to get ahead of himself due to the fact that the Sky Blues are undoubtedly going into the tie as the favourites as a result of the stark contrast in form of the two sides.

Whilst Coventry haven’t gone on a seismic run of good form, it is still night and day different to what Sunderland have endured in recent weeks, having fallen to five successive defeats.

Going into the game, Sunderland have set a Championship record, one that doesn’t hold them in good stead ahead of what will be a huge task at the CBS Arena.

Sunderland enter the Championship play-offs with worst form in history

Since the Championship play-offs began, no side had entered having suffered five successive defeats until Sunderland this season.

Whilst it reflects on the fact that Sunderland did well to ensure that their play-off position was secured before the huge drop in form, it is also a notable concern, especially because of the fact that these five games have seen Regis Le Bris’ side find the back of the net once.

Luckily for Sunderland, no teams involved find themselves in brilliant form, with all four sides having won a maximum of two games in their last five of the Championship regular season.

Regis Le Bris must rejuvenate Black Cats side that thrived in first half of 2024/25 campaign

In recent months, Sunderland have looked completely different to the side that was well within the title push in the first half of the campaign. Much of this comes down to the huge drop off in confidence of the attacking ranks within the side; defensively there are no issues, but the Black Cats simply can’t find the back of the net.

One man who has been centre of the dip in form has been French talisman Wilson Isidor, who was incredible by running off the last shoulder of the defender, showing brilliant composure to tuck away chances, whilst also popping up by taking difficult opportunities as well.

More recent games have seen Sunderland not being able to play to Isidor, or fellow striker Eliezer Mayenda’s strengths, something that Le Bris must ensure that his side return to doing if they are to see any success in the play-offs.
