We’ve all dreamed of breaking a Guinness World Record at some point in our lives and for one former Newport County star, that dream was realised.
The League Two side once hit headlines around the world for an incredible record set during their game against Cheltenham Town back in 2021.
It’s not very often that this happens but those in attendance at Rodney Parade can say ‘I was there’.

Tom King set a Guinness World Record for an incredible goal
There’s been many stunning goals around the world but from a goalkeeper? Very rare.
But for Tom King, his audacious effort against Cheltenham hit the record books after his distance of 96.01m (105 yds) beat the previous record set by Asmir Begovic who scored for Stoke City against Southampton in November 2013 from 91.9m (100.5 yards.
After being told that he had broken the record, he told Newport’s club website: “I’m sure it will be talked about for a long time to come, so I’m proud and I’m sure my family will be extremely proud too.
“I’ll have to drop Asmir a message to send my commiserations, but, in all honesty, it’s different territory for me because I never dreamt of being in the books that you get for Christmas every year.
“Hopefully I might actually read it if I get one for Christmas this year. I’m delighted and hopefully no one beats it for a long time now so I can show my grandkids!”
Tom King is now playing in the Premier League
The goal scored by King didn’t directly result in his rise to the Premier League but nowadays you can find the 34-year-old in the top flight.
After leaving Newport in 2021, King played for Salford City before joining Northampton Town.
King has been at Wolves since July 2023 and has only made one appearance for the West Midlands, coming off the bench against Brentford in May 2025.
