Championship clubs circle former Southampton star Che Adams

Championship clubs will be looking to sign a new striker this summer, and in an EFL Analysis exclusive, we can reveal that Che Adams could return to England.

Formerly of Sheffield United, Birmingham City and Southampton, Adams is an experienced player at Championship level.

Last season, as Southampton won promotion to the Premier League, the Scotland international fired home 17 goals in all competitions, including 15 in the second tier.

Adams form throughout the campaign put several clubs on red alert, and with his contract expiring, he was available to sign on a free transfer.

Although some English teams were interested in his signature, notably Wolves and Leeds United, the 28-year-old chose to move abroad and sign for Torino with his future now up in the air once more.

Championship clubs want to sign Che Adams from Torino

While his former club Southampton have been relegated to the Championship, Adams has enjoyed a productive debut campaign in the Serie A.

He’s plundered eight goals in 30 appearances for Torino, with the Scotsman forming a strike partnership alongside Antonio Sanabria.

Adams, whose contract at the Italian side expires in June 2027, could see his time at the club end prematurely this summer.

Speaking to our transfer expert Graeme Bailey, we can exclusively reveal that Adams is ‘on the radar’ of several Premier League and Championship clubs, and the centre-forward is ‘open to a move’ back to the UK.

Bailey claims that Torino could be open to selling him if the right offer comes in, despite only joining the club in 2024, presenting an opportunity for ambitious teams to pounce.

The Championship teams that could afford Adams

Adams boasts a decent record of almost one goal scored every three games in the second tier, returning 49 times in 156 appearances across spells at Sheffield United, Birmingham and Southampton.

But successfully striking a deal for the forward, who will undoubtedly want a Premier League move, suggests only a select few clubs could afford his wages.

According to Capology, Adams earns a reported £55k-per-week, which is a huge sum of money that would blow many teams’ wage bills out of the water.

The two relegated clubs, Leicester City and Southampton, could afford to sign him on that current money, while his former side Birmingham could use their riches to fund a transfer for him.

Unless teams are willing to make him their highest earner, realistically, only sides expected to battle for automatic promotion next season could sign the Torino man.
