Chris Davies drops hint on next Birmingham City signing as he pinpoints three weak areas in squad

Birmingham City made their return to the Championship when they hosted Ipswich Town in this season’s opener, with the two sides sharing the spoils as the game finished 1-1.

Chris Davies believed the decision to award a penalty late in the game to Ipswich Town for a handball against Lyndon Dykes was harsh.

Birmingham City impressed throughout the match and may consider themselves unlucky to have drawn the game.

Jay Stansfield scored the opener in the game and performed well; however, many Birmingham City players were putting in a top performance, with new signing Kyogo Furuhashi notably shining for Chris Davies’ side.

Davies may believe the only failure from the match was their inability to see out the result; however, he may have a plan to address that moving forward for the Championship campaign.

Chris Davies is still looking to add to Birmingham City

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the match with Ipswich Town, Chris Davies identified a few areas Birmingham City needed to add to their squad.

One of the areas proved to be true, as he wished to add more goals to the team, with many of their victories last season being secured by one goal, and this proved to be detrimental as they failed to hold out against Ipswich.

He said: “You go up in any league, that league will be quicker, the games will be quicker, so we wanted to address that.

“We also wanted to add extra goal threat as well. We won a lot of games by just a goal last season, and there were a few tight ends to games where we couldn’t get that extra goal.

“Set pieces as well, we wanted to make sure we had quality in our delivery, so they’re the areas we’ve been looking at.

“But transfer windows are never perfect; there are so many moving parts, and there’s still a way to go actually until we have a squad that will be complete, and I’m really happy with.”

Recruitment by Birmingham City

The Blues had been chasing Chuba Akpom to address their shortage of threat in front of the net and to add more goals to their side; however, Ipswich have won the race for the striker.

However, Birmingham’s decision to bring in Marvin Ducksch may prove to solve this problem after his campaign last year, as he had eight goals and eight assists during his final season at Werder Bremen.

During the 2023/24 campaign, meanwhile, Ducksch produced an even more impressive return of 12 goals and nine assists. The tenth-most in Germany’s first division.

While Birmingham have added another star to their roster, expect more business to be done before the closure of the transfer window, with Davies determined to have all the resources to achieve his goal of promotion this season.
