While the transfer window closed more than two weeks ago, Derby County have just brought in a new player and fans of the club are delighted.
It’s been an interesting month for Derby County. The Rams dropped head coach Paul Warne after a poor run of form, and managed to lure John Eustace away from high-flying Blackburn Rovers to take up the challenge at Pride Park.
Since then, Derby have largely avoided being the main talking points in the Championship, but they’ve just put themselves back in the spotlight.
Eustace has plenty of problems to solve at Derby, but he’ll be hoping this new signing will go a long way to improving the club’s odds of survival this season.
Kemar Roofe joins Derby County on a free transfer
To the surprise of everyone, Derby teased a new arrival on their social media accounts on Thursday lunchtime, and moments later, revealed they had completed the free transfer of Kemar Roofe.
The 32-year-old was a free agent after being released by Scottish giants Rangers, and had been linked with the Rams in the past before speculation went quiet.
Now, Derby have confirmed Roofe will join the club until the end of the season on a short-term deal, giving Eustace more “attacking options” as he looks to avoid relegation.
Roofe previously turned out for Leeds United in the Championship, scoring 33 goals in total — including four against his new club. But, we’re sure they’ll forgive him for that now.
Derby County fans react to surprise new signing
Derby County fans are as impressed as they are surprised by the new arrival, and have flocked to social media to share praise for the club in completing the deal.
One supporter said, “If he stays fit, he could be a quality addition,” while another proclaimed, “What a signing that is!”
Clearly, fans are happy. One even wrote: “I love you so much Derby County Football Club.” Another said: “Over the moon, great signing.”
As we said, this was a total surprise to everyone, with one fan claiming the transfer came “completely out of nowhere.”
So, how effective will Kemar Roofe actually be for Derby? Well, one supporter said, “hope he comes with a point to prove,” and it’s that kind of dogged determination the Rams will need to stay up.
Some supporters heralded “The Eustace pull” in getting the deal over the line, while others suggested this signing means Derby are “staying up.”
But, others wanted more. Specifically, Derby fans expect free agent Ryan Kent to join, too, with a Rangers connection perhaps on the cards for Roofe. Slightly greedy, but we’ll watch this space.
