The beauty of the final few days of the transfer window is that anything can happen.

Transfers happen out of the blue and deals nobody would’ve expected to happen come around.

For Frank Lampard and Coventry City, it’s been a somewhat frustrating transfer window so far, but they have still started the season relatively well.

Keeping key men like Haji Wright at the Sky Blues has been as important as any new arrival, however, a club icon could be heading for the exit door before the end of deadline day.

Wrexham make approach for Ben Sheaf, deal agreed

Ben Sheaf is one of the standout faces at Coventry in his five years at the club, and symbolises their transformation into a side competing for promotion in the Championship.

Sheaf joined on loan from Arsenal before making his move permanent the following season, and has gone on to captain the club.

Injuries have hindered the midfielder and he has slipped down the pecking order, which has led to Wrexham making an approach, as per Mike McGrath.

Lampard is a huge fan of the 27-year-old and in February 2025 admitted that he was someone that he would prefer to keep.

He told Coventry Live: “Everyone here at the club wants Ben to stay. As far as I’m concerned, I do.

“I want him to stay at the club but there doesn’t feel like a huge rush. Ben might say something different, I don’t know because I don’t know where he’s at exactly with it, but it doesn’t feel like a huge rush because we’re right in the middle of games. But I think all conversations are positive, for sure.”

Since the news of Wrexham’s interest first emerged, it has now been revealed by Anthony Joseph that Coventry have accepted a £6.5m deal for the midfielder. Sheaf will undergo his medical at Wrexham tomorrow.

Ben Sheaf would be a huge loss to Coventry City

Although Sheaf’s playing time is likely to be reduced due to the quality options available to Lampard, moving him on isn’t something that should be considered lightly.

Not only does the midfielder represent all that is good about the club; the 27-year-old has plenty of experience when it comes to dealing with a promotion battle.

Wrexham will fancy themselves to compete with the Sky Blues in the upper echelons of the Championship table and Coventry will have to seriously think about whether or not this is the right move.
