Hull City are currently the subject of a transfer embargo, with a ban for three windows being enforced upon the club.

The Tigers are set to appeal the transfer embargo, as they announced through a statement put out through public channels.

Hull had several transfer targets prior to the ban; it remains to be seen if they will opt to join other clubs.

Meanwhile, the club’s chairman has hit out at the ‘misinformation’ around Hull’s current financial state.

At present, due to the transfer embargo, the club will be unable to make any purchases, so they won’t be able to break their five most expensive signings.

These five signings did occur at Hull while they were in the Premier League, with the club unlikely to match this level of fee expenditure until they are back in the top flight.

EFL Analysis brings you the five most expensive signings in Hull City’s history.

Top five most expensive Hull City signings

5. Nikica Jelavic – £6.7 million

Hull City acquired the services of Nikica Jelavic in January 2014, signing him for a fee of £6.7 million.

The Tigers brought him in from Everton on a three-and-a-half-year deal after he had impressed at the Merseyside club in the Premier League.

Jelavic would spend one full season at the club between 2014 and September 2015, playing a total of 50 matches for the Tigers, scoring 13 goals.

He only left the club after their relegation to the Championship, making the move to West Ham.

4. Shane Long – £7.3 million

Shane Long was brought to Hull City from West Brom in January 2014, and he would form a formidable partnership with Jelavic.

Long may not have been the most prolific striker, but he was beloved by fans of each club he played for due to the work ethic he brought at the top of the pitch.

The Ireland international would leave the club at the start of the following season to join Southampton for around £12 million, a fee Hull could not turn down.

In his 17 matches for the Tigers, he only scored four goals for the club, all in the 2014/15 season.

3. Kamil Grosicki – £7.75 million

Kamil Grosicki joined Hull City from Rennes in January 2017, and he spent three years at the club.

The Polish international was brought in to help Hull survive in the Premier League, but the club would be relegated in 2017.

However, Grosicki remained at the club in the Championship until January 2020, when he decided to join West Brom.

2. Abel Hernandez – £10.3 million

The Uruguayan international was brought in for a club record fee at the time from Palermo in September 2014.

Abel Hernandez had impressed in Italy in both Serie A and B before moving to England.

Hull City fans would see Abel Hernandez play 111 matches across the Premier League, Championship, and domestic competition, scoring 39 goals.

He would leave the club in August 2018 to sign for CSKA Moscow, where he would spend a season at the Russian club.

1. Ryan Mason – £13.2 million

Ryan Mason is the most expensive signing Hull City have ever made, with the midfielder joining them from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2016.

The English midfielder would not be able to fulfil the £13.2 million transfer fee that Hull had spent on him, as he was forced to retire after suffering a fractured skull against Chelsea in January 2017.

Mason had an encouraging start to his Hull career, but with him missing, it would not help the club in their battle against relegation.

He has now been appointed as manager of West Brom ahead of the 2025/26 season after a number of years coaching with Spurs.
