Ashley Young’s son has been on trial with Ipswich Town’s Under-21s this summer, opening up the chance for a potential father-son double deal at the Championship club.

Former England international Young signed for the recently relegated Suffolk outfit on a one-year deal in July following the expiration of his Everton contract.

The 40-year-old has returned to the second tier for the first time in two decades, with his last appearance coming for Watford in 2006. He wasn’t the only Young to arrive at Portman Road, though.

His son, Tyler, had been at Peterborough United until this summer, where he missed out on the chance to play his father in the FA Cup last term. He then reportedly joined his father at Ipswich, going on trial with their academy side as of late July. Now, a decision has been made on Young’s future.

Tyler Young signs for Ipswich Town’s Under-21s

The Youngs have now gone one step further from being on opposing teams in an FA Cup clash.

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, 19-year-old Young has signed for Ipswich’s Under-21s.

He had been on trial throughout all of the side’s pre-season, but has now put pen to paper to join permanently.

Since the Championship was rebranded in 2004, no father-son pair has played together for the same team. Young junior will be with the Under-21s, and his dad is on a one-year deal, but stranger things have happened.

Formerly at Arsenal, Queens Park Rangers and MK Dons, Tyler made one senior appearance for the Posh.

After leaving the League One side, he has reportedly been settling in well in Suffolk alongside his dad.

He was on the bench against Derby’s Under-21s in the Premier League 2 in mid-August.

Despite turning 40 in July, Young has played in every one of Ipswich’s games upon their return to the Championship.

Coming in at right back, the ex-Aston Villa player has clocked up 230 minutes already, most recently starting in the 2-2 draw against Derby County and also being in the XI for the Carabao Cup loss at Bromley.

Young has recently insisted he can play whenever he is needed this season as Town look to shake off a tough start.

“People have questioned whether I can keep on going,” Young told BBC Radio Suffolk.

“I look back to last season, playing 32 games in the Premier League. I can do as many games as the manager wants, it is game by game.

“I’m here to help the team, on and off the pitch. Whenever the manager calls upon me, I’ll give 100%. Hopefully I can be involved as much as possible.”

He has also been doing punditry work for Sky Sports as well as playing for the second tier side.
