Ipswich Town are heading into the clash with Southampton amid some expensive transfer negotiations.

Ipswich Town host Southampton this afternoon (August 17) in a Championship clash between two promotion favourites.

So far this season, Ipswich were held by Birmingham City to a 1-1 draw on opening night before a shock defeat to Bromley in the Carabao Cup after a penalty shoot-out.

Following the Blues stalemate, Kieran McKenna admitted Ipswich need signings, and his demand for reinforcements will have undoubtedly increased after Omari Hutchinson’s move to Nottingham Forest.

Now, Ipswich have reportedly targeted their Hutchinson replacement with a £17.2m bid offered.

Ipswich Town offer £17.2m bid for winger Sindre Walle Egeli

Ipswich need to replace Hutchinson for their Championship campaign, which will be an unenviable task for the Tractor Boys’ transfer team and McKenna, given the impact he had since arriving from Chelsea.

Hutchinson scored 14 goals and notched seven assists in 82 games for Ipswich over the last two seasons, and now his replacement has potentially been sought.

European outlet Tipsbladet report that Ipswich have made a €20m/£17.2m bid for FC Nordsjaelland winger Sindre Walle Egeli.

Their report includes that although the bid is yet to be accepted, the two clubs are in “positive negotiations about a sale” for the 19-year-old.

Dutch giants PSV, who are linked with Gustavo Hamer of Sheffield United, are now reportedly “out of the picture” for Egeli, leaving the transfer wide open for Ipswich.

Egeli is a highly coveted property in European football after breaking Norwegian youth records held by Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, and his impressive breakout season form last term has continued into 2025/26.

Omari Hutchinson’s statistics compared to Sindre Walle Egeli

McKenna will be unable to call upon Hutchinson for Ipswich’s game against Southampton, but the statistics behind both players point towards Egeli being a capable heir on the Ipswich flanks.

Last season, Egeli scored nine goals and notched five assists in 31 Superligaen outings in his first full season as Nordsjaelland.

Egeli, who made his senior Norway debut last year, has taken his form from last season into the new campaign with one goal and two assists in his first five league outings for Nordsjaelland in 2025/26.

Although the Danish winger is an unproven quality in English football, both players share a similar profile and career trajectory.

There are promising signs regarding Egeli, and given McKenna’s proven track record for developing young talent, such as Hutchinson, the Norwegian starlet could prove to be a real coup for Ipswich if the £17.2m bid materialises.
