Norwich City transfer makes director ‘cry a little’ as £3m move draws emotional farewell

The reaction to Marcelino Nunez’s stunning move across the Old Farm from Norwich City to Ipswich Town was one of understandable fury.

While completing the most unexpected of £10 million moves, Marcelino Nunez became the first Norwich player in 24 years to swap Carrow Road for Portman Road.

Sporting director Ben Knapper insists that he understands the anger displayed by a shellshocked Norwich City fanbase. Whether he understands the true extent of the anger, well, let’s just say it will be interesting to hear the content of the chants in the away end at Ewood Park if Saturday’s trip to Blackburn Rovers goes badly.

Norwich, at least, are wasting no time putting that £10 million windfall to good use.

Nearly two months after reports of their interest first emerged, Pelle Mattsson finally put pen to paper in the green and yellow corner of East Anglia. The former Silkeborg IF midfielder joins in a deal worth up to £3 million.

But unlike with that whole Marcelino Nunez drama, the reaction from Silkeborg is not one of anger but pride, mixed in with a dash of sadness.

Silkeborg bid emotional farewell as Pelle Mattsson joins Norwich City

Mattsson brings an end to eleven years at JYSK Park. The 24-year-old former Denmark youth star leaves not only as a fan favourite but also a league and cup champion in his homeland.

By his own admission, sporting director Jesper Stuker admits that Mattsson’s farewell leaves him proud but pained.

“We cry a little with one eye and laugh with the other in SIF, because we are always sad to lose talented players,” Stuker tells the official Silkeborg website. “But fortunately, we have a long tradition of new players taking over and taking on the task.

“It is also no secret that Pelle Mattsson is a real Silkeborg boy who has the club right in his heart, and that means a lot to the fans, society and the club.”

“Selling football players is an important part of our strategy and has helped to move the club to a higher level in recent years. Pelle is another example of this, and this sale places him among the absolute largest sales in Silkeborg IF’s history.”

Stuker explains that Mattsson made the decision to leave in order to ‘try his hand at a higher level’. He also opted against extending a contract which was due to expire at the end of 2026.

“Ultimately, the pride in bringing Pelle from a local youth player to an adventure abroad is the most important,” Stuker smiles.

Ben Knapper explains what Mattsson will add to Liam Manning’s Canaries squad

Mattsson will inherit the number seven shirt made vacant by Borja Sainz’s move to FC Porto earlier in the summer.

A deep-lying, defensively-minded midfielder in comparison to the prancing, playmaking Nunez, Mattsson will hope to add a combination of steel and silk to a Norwich side who are yet to keep a clean sheet in the Liam Manning era.

Danish football expert Toke Theilade told EFL Analysis recently that Pelle Mattsson is a midfielder who does the ‘dirty work’ with ‘ great positioning and anticipation skills’.

“Pelle is someone we have followed for a considerable amount of time and we’re delighted to finally bring him to the club,” Knapper says, Mattsson’s arrival easing at least a fraction of the frustration following Nunez’s highly-contentious sale.

“He will add great technical quality to our midfield and he possesses an extremely well-rounded profile, effective in all phases of the game.

“He has a lot of experience for his age and will also bring leadership qualities, communication and personality to our group. He’s an intelligent player and someone that we feel will complement the rest of our squad in a really nice way.

“We’re all excited to work with him and we look forward to him playing an important role here going forwards.”
