After getting over the heartache of losing in the Championship play-off final, EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal that Sheffield United are close to making their first signing of the summer.

Sheffield United’s defeat to Sunderland at Wembley was a bitter pill to swallow, but it’s only fuelled Chris Wilder and his players to achieve automatic promotion in 2025/26.

The Blades will need to bolster multiple areas of their squad, most notably in defence, to escape the Championship next season.

Sunderland loanee Chris Mepham has been linked with Sheffield United during the transfer window, while the Blades are also interested in Coventry City’s Jack Rudoni and QPR centre-back Jimmy Dunne.

Sheffield United are closing in on the signing of Jimmy Dunne

After an incredible season at QPR, Dunne has snubbed a new contract at the London side and is set to become a Championship free agent.

In January, Sheffield United tried to sign Dunne, failing on that occasion, but EFL Analysis can now exclusively reveal that the Yorkshire outfit are ‘pushing ahead’ with their interest in the 27-year-old.

As per information from our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, the Blades are ready to seal the capture of the Republic of Ireland international after placing him on their radar for a while.

Dunne was incredible defensively for the R’s last term across 45 Championship appearances, and even showed his aerial prowess with five goals.

The former Burnley man has now earned his chance to play for a team expected to battle for promotion in 2025/26, with United potentially landing a bargain.

Dunne’s stats for QPR in 2024/25

Dunne has been a ‘quality’ servant for QPR, appearing on 163 occasions since joining the club in 2021 and scoring 11 goals.

The Irishman has developed into one of the best centre-backs in the division, who will add some serious quality to Wilder’s back line.

Jimmy Dunne’s 2024/25 Championship stats
45 appearances
5 goals
4 Team of the Weeks
10 clean sheets
5.5 clearances per game
2.5 tackles per game
3.4 balls recovered per game
8.4 duels won per game (63%)

A rock at the heart of Marti Cifuentes’ defence, as well as technically brilliant in possession, Wilder will be excited about the prospect of working with Dunne as his move to Bramall Lane edges closer.
