Ruben Selles is reportedly ‘close’ to making his first signing at Sheffield United, with a young defender set to arrive at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United appointed Ruben Selles as Chris Wilder’s successor, with the new Blades boss seemingly fit for purpose for the new owner’s change of approach.

The Blades fell at the final hurdle last season, missing out on promotion to the Premier League after Tommy Watson’s late Wembley goal for Sunderland.

As a result, the board acted quickly to change the direction of the club, going for a more AI-based and statistical approach, something that has already had an impact on signings.

Sheffield United are closing in on their next arrival, one that their system has uncovered as a brilliant prospect for the future.

Sheffield United made moves to sign Septemvri Sofia defender Mihail Polendakov

The next name set to walk into Bramall Lane is Septemvri Sofia defender Mihail Polendakov, with reputable Bulgarian journalist Metodi Shumanov reporting that the Blades are ‘close to signing’ the youngster.

The 18-year-old is regarded as ‘one of the hottest Bulgarian prospects’, and would certainly be one to keep an eye on for the future.

Polendakov’s career so far has seen him utilised at senior level, playing in the EFBet Liga, the top division in Bulgaria.

The Bulgarian national set-up has also noted his talents in recent years, having accumulated a total of 26 games for the youth teams, from U16 to U21.

Where Mihail Polendakov could fit into Ruben Selles’ plans

It is likely that Polendakov would be a player for the future and may perhaps play a more limited role this season, but based on his experience in top-flight Bulgarian football, he could slip straight in for a few matches.

Knowing that Polendakov has played the likes of European regulars Ludogorets in the league, he could potentially acclimatise quickly to the speed of the English second-tier.

The 2007-born youngster is often deployed at right-back, where he will crucially provide extra depth in Selles’ side, but can also be utilised in a more advanced role on the right flank.

The priority for Selles regarding Polendakov will be to nurture him slowly at this level, but there are few doubts that he could be seen in glimpses this season if the Blades do secure his signature.
